Afghanistan (Pashto/Dari: افغانستان‎), officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is a landlocked country in the Middle East.

Afghanistan has a population of 42 million people, making it the 42nd most populated country in the world. The country's strategic location along the Silk Road connected it to the cultures of other countries in the Middle East and other parts of Asia, which is why Afghanistan is very diverse.

Its capital is Kabul, the currency is Afghan afghanis and the current president is Ashraf Ghani.

Afghanistan is located in Central and Southern Asia. It borders Iran towards the west, Pakistan towards the south and east, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan to the north, and China towards the northeast.

In 2016, 33 million, including the 3 million Afghan citizens living as refugees in both Pakistan and Iran, lived in Afghanistan. The population is rising. On average, any person will live for 60.5 years.

99% of citizens are Muslim. 90% of Afghanistan Sunni Muslims while the rest are Shia Muslims. The other 1% is made up of Sikhs and Hindu.
