Allium subg. Cepa
editChives (Allium schoenoprasum) is a circumboreal species. Although escapes of these widely-cultivated plants are common, natural populations are now considered to be endangered in New York. There is no reliable way to distinguish between native and cultivated chives except subjectively by habitat. The New York Flora Atlas suggests: "Native populations grow on rocky ledges and shores adjacent to rivers, and on alvar. Nonnative populations are persistent from former cultivation or occasionally naturalize in fields, thickets, roadsides, and other disturbed areas."[1]
