Welcome to the Administrative Assistance reading room. You can request assistance from administrators for handling a variety of problems here and alert them about problems which may require special actions not normally used during regular content editing. Please be patient as administrators are often quite busy with either their own projects or trying to perform general maintenance and cleanup.

You can deal with most vandalism yourself: fix it, then warn the user. If there is repeated vandalism by one user, lots of vandalism on a single page, or vandalism from many users, tell an admin here, or in #wikibooks (say !admin to get attention).

For more general questions and assistance that doesn't require an administrator, please use the Assistance Reading Room.

Low quality contributions from Special:Contributions/2601:240:E000:FB10::/64

There have been a number of low quality contributions from this range. For example The Lingo Show/Words, StoryBots (Google Sites), StoryBots (Google Sites)/Netflix, The Lingo Show/Words 2. I can't see much pedagogical purpose in these pages, and they're not structured into a book that could be useful to readers. Any communication with the IP is quite difficult as there is a lot of hopping in this range.

I propose we block the range, and delete their contributions. The block should only affect a single connection, as IPv6 ranges are formed that way. Any comments? --Jules (Mrjulesd) 12:30, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

I tend to agree. I've tried to encourage some kind of improvements to that page but they have not been responsive. The page existed for 10 days and I deleted it earlier today and protected it against being created again for a while. I haven't blocked any users yet as I felt they edits were in good faith. What do others think?--Xania     talk 14:29, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
@Xania: thanks for your view. Well they haven't edited since their pages were deleted, so a block at this point seems pointless. To the IP (if they can see this at all): please do not create any further book pages without first creating an account. Failure to comply may result in further page deletions and blocks. --Jules (Mrjulesd) 07:45, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
They created 3 Little Words Mini and 3 Palabritas Mini so I have blocked the range. --Jules (Mrjulesd) 22:39, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

Unable to edit page - : World_Stamp_Catalogue/India

I checked edit source for this and nothing happened.

I'm not blocked, and I didn't see any protection icons.

Can someone unprotect this page to allow for Linter identifed concerns to be rectified? Thanks. ShakespeareFan00 (discusscontribs) 14:02, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

Hi, I have checked and the page is not protected. Are you getting an error when you attempt to edit the page? Or are you getting an error when you save your changes?--Xania     talk 14:25, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
I click the 'Edit Source' tab and nothing happens, I don't see an edit window, I just see the page. ShakespeareFan00 (discusscontribs) 14:35, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
I'm also having problems adding comments here ShakespeareFan00 (discusscontribs) 14:44, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
@ShakespeareFan00: I've just made a test edit on World Stamp Catalogue/India without problem.
I also tried with my test account, User:Mrjulesd(alt), again no problem.
I can't see why you would have a problem, unless perhaps your IP is hard-blocked somewhere. Is there any indication of this? --Jules (Mrjulesd) 15:40, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
Nothing in the block log related to my IP, and I CAN edit other pages. I can edit the specfic page when logged out. ShakespeareFan00 (discusscontribs) 22:46, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
I've also been able to make edits on 'uneditable' page by using Chrome over Firefox. ShakespeareFan00 (discusscontribs) 22:47, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
Which makes me wonder if there's something very specfic going on? ShakespeareFan00 (discusscontribs) 22:49, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
Just wondering if it is anything to do with your JavaScript. You have User:ShakespeareFan00/common.js and meta:User:ShakespeareFan00/common.js which could interfere possibly. Try disabling these. Also you could w:Wikipedia:Purge and w:Wikipedia:Bypass your cache. You could experiment by removing gadgets from your Special:Preferences.
Just some things I would try. --Jules (Mrjulesd) 23:00, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
First Thing I Disabled was user side scripts, and it did not change anything. ShakespeareFan00 (discusscontribs) 23:20, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
@ShakespeareFan00: Have any of my suggestions made a difference? --Jules (Mrjulesd) 07:46, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
Sadly not. I can edit the page logged out, or in Chrome though ShakespeareFan00 (discusscontribs) 07:50, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
Hmm I don't know quite what else to suggest. One possible route is to ask at w:Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). They tend to be pretty helpful there, and could have come across this before. If you do so, please link to this page so they can get a good idea of what has happened. --Jules (Mrjulesd) 07:57, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
You say you can edit in Chrome. What browser are you using that is failing? That's the most likely problem given you can edit other pages. MarcGarver (discusscontribs) 13:36, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
Firefox Nightly 101.0a1 (2022-04-24) And I've noted both the issues I've had upstream with their web compbatibility tracker. ShakespeareFan00 (discusscontribs) 16:55, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

Think Python/Lists

In looking through this with a view to correcting LintErrors, I've found a different issue..

Namely that the text here doesn't match the earliest GFDL version I can find for the given chapter at [[1]] and some of the material that is different seems to match with the PDF version which is under an incompatible NC license. Which SPECFIC version was imported, and where is the supporting evidence that all the material included was under GFDL to start with? ShakespeareFan00 (discusscontribs) 06:45, 29 April 2022 (UTC)

I'm sad to say this, but I think the book should probably be deleted. According to [2] it was released under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 Unported License, which is sadly incompatible with Wikibooks. --Jules (Mrjulesd) 12:17, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
The original version was under GFDL at some point, the preface says as much, so it's not as straightforward as it would seem, At some point the GFDL version would have been compatible with the licensing here. However, if there are additions in the PDf version those would have to be removed of course. ShakespeareFan00 (discusscontribs) 19:26, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
Well you have to try to untangle the GFDL content from the CC BY-NC content, if that is at all possible. To be frank, CC BY-NC content is very unlikely to create legal problems for the WMF as it is a freely-licensed and available non-profit host. The prohibition against CC BY-NC was mainly to reduce the encumbrance of other entities seeking to use the content commercially,. --Jules (Mrjulesd) 20:34, 29 April 2022 (UTC)

George Reeves Person (GRP)

He is back on Talk:Chess/Famous Games/Opera Game. Protection is requested here as he is restoring his hoaxes and wasting time; he uses a proxy service to hop IPs and waste editor time through revert-warring with them. JavaHurricane (discusscontribs) 16:02, 1 May 2022 (UTC)

I've protected the page for a couple of weeks, and blocked some IPs that are not already globally blocked. --Jules (Mrjulesd) 16:30, 1 May 2022 (UTC)

Repeated Copyvios

Hi! I've noticed that User:Saula1986 has been repeatedly pulling recipes wholesale from other websites and adding them to the cookbook with very few and sometimes no changes. Sometimes they will pull multiple different sources into one page, but they are still copied. I've flagged the most egregious examples as copyvios, but I would appreciate some help dealing with the situation. Thank you :) -- Nostriker (discusscontribs) 14:56, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

I am sorry about all that, it wont repeat itself Saula1986 (discusscontribs) 17:48, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
@Nostriker: do these problems still exist? I've been away. --Jules (Mrjulesd) 20:37, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

I've deleted:

Cookbook:Nigerian Fiofio Cookbook:Nigerian Efinrin Soup Cookbook:Nigerian Fura Da Nono Cookbook:Nigerian Gorigo Soup Cookbook:Nigerian Gurasa Bandashe Cookbook:Nigerian Ifokore Cookbook:Nigerian Ishapa Soup Cookbook:Nigerian Marugbo Soup Cookbook:Nigerian Miyan Zogale Cookbook:Nigerian Nni Oka Cookbook:Nigerian Ofe Akpu Cookbook:Nigerian Sapala Cookbook:Plantain Chips with Cayenne (Kelewele) Cookbook:Nigerian Wara

@Saula1986: please do not create any further copyright violations. Do not copy text from sites with different licenses to our. Failure to comply may lead to loss of editing privileges. --Jules (Mrjulesd) 21:18, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

Thank you! -- Nostriker (discusscontribs) 22:28, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
Cookbook:Nigerian Fura Da Nono is another page which was previously deleted as a copyright violation. It has since been re-created but seems to be copyright free this time.--Xania     talk 23:23, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
Now at Cookbook:Fura Da Nono (Milk and Kefir Porridge), it seems to be ok now, or at least https://copyvios.toolforge.org/ didn't pick up a problem. --Jules (Mrjulesd) 16:44, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
Hi all! I've picked up and flagged additional copyright violations by User:Saula1986 using https://copyvios.toolforge.org/. Thanks! -- Nostriker (discusscontribs) 21:51, 24 May 2022 (UTC)

I've further deleted:

@Saula1986: You have been previously warned about the copy/pasting of text from incompatible sources, so I have decided to block you from contributing to the Cookbook for a week. Enough is enough. --Jules (Mrjulesd) 10:00, 25 May 2022 (UTC)

I take full responsibility for my action, its my first time editing anything on a platform. I wontvsay ibwas nervous lr paranoid, i was just eager to contribute. I sincerely apologuze for any damages i may have caused. If it is nit too much to ask i will plead for a last chance nd if i do anything stupid please blick me permanently. Saula1986 (discusscontribs) 09:18, 26 May 2022 (UTC)
@Saula1986: it may be best for you may wait out your block, in a weeks time this will happen automatically; but please make sure you don't post any more copyvios. If you want to appeal to another admin, please follow the instructions that I have posted on your talk page, "You may appeal this action with a reasonable argument by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below" to your talk page. --Jules (Mrjulesd) 22:07, 26 May 2022 (UTC)

Change of a directory name

Hi,
Files from ETH Oberon, release 2.3.7, are in a "directory" named according to the release date. The files are referenced in and following section Oberon#Module_Sources_in_ETH_Oberon,_PC-Native.

Consequent to discussion in the Oberon mailing list, I want to change the "directory" name 2003-01-05 to 2.3.7. Oberon/ETH Oberon/2003-01-05/ATADisks.Mod will become Oberon/ETH Oberon/2.3.7/ATADisks.Mod, Oberon/2003-01-05/Oberon.Text will become Oberon/2.3.7/Oberon.Text and Oberon/2003-01-05/Native.Tool will become Oberon/2.3.7/Native.Tool. In total, more than 50 pages will be affected.

To my understanding, I can move a page but can not change a "directory". Therefore I request the change by an administrator or an instruction for me to make the change. After the change is made, I can edit citations so that the pages are reached at the new location. Thanks, ... PeterEasthope (discusscontribs) 16:18, 28 May 2022 (UTC)
