ਆਗਿਆ ਲੈਣਾ - Parting
editWhen people leave or depart they ask for permission of the other person.
Formal leave
editHere Deepa meets her teacher Gian Singh at the school office when she is leaving for home as the day ends. She concludes the conversation with a ਸਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ which signals that she is seeking leave of her teacher.
- Gian Singh : Deepa, are you leaving for home?
- Deepa : Yes sir.
- Gian Singh : I have kept a book for you.
- Deepa : Thank you sir, Sat Sri Akal.
- ਘਰ = home, ਜਾ = to go, ਰਹੀ = indicator of continuity of verb's action, ਜਾ ਰਹੀ = going, ਸ੍ਰੀਮਾਨ ਜੀ = sir, ਤੇਰੇ ਲਈ = for ਇੱਕ = a or one, ਕਿਤਾਬ = book, ਰੱਖੀ = kept
Informal leave
editThere are informal ways of taking leave of others.
- Sanjeev : Sunil, are you getting ready?
- Sunil : Yes, I am going to college.
- Sanjeev : Ok, see you later.
- Sunil : Ok.
More parting greetings
editIn the above formal conversation Deepa took leave of her teacher Gian Singh by saying ਸਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ - Sat Sri Akal which signalled that Deepa is departing. This was the same as the greeting when they met. In the next conversation Sunil takes leave with ਠੀਕ ਹੈ, ਫਿਰ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹਾਂ - Ok, see you later. Parting greetings have many cultural variants. A Hindu may use ਨਮਸਤੇ - Namaste or ਨਮਸਕਾਰ - Namaskar and a muslim may say ਖੁਦਾ ਹਾਫਿਜ਼ - Khuda Hafiz. Inter religio-cultural ਰੱਬ ਰਾਖਾ - Rab Rakha and ਅਲਵਿਦਾ - Alvida are also popular.
