Medlars are largish shrubs or small trees. The fruit that grows on them is edible. They were introduced into Greece in 700BC and to Rome in 200BC. They are found in the winter, which is rather unusual. They can only be eaten raw after bletting.

They are sometimes made into jelly and can be used in cheese.
