A black forest cake, also called black forest gâteau or schwarzwälder kirschtorte, is a layered chocolate cake filled and flavored with whipped cream and cooked sour cherries. Alcoholic versions are also flavored with kirsch liqueur. The term "black forest" has since been extended and applied to other desserts flavored with chocolate and cherries.
