The African star apple, also called agbalumo, udala, or udara, is a tree fruit native to tropical Africa. It is spherical and yellow-orange.[1][2] The skin and pulp are both edible.
Characteristics
editThe fruit are generally round in shape, with a yellow interior and exterior. The flesh is sweet, tart, segmented, and high in pectin. The inner seeds are arranged in a star pattern.[1]
Selection and storage
editThese fruits do not ripen well on their own after picking. If harvesting them yourself, select ripe fruits, as the unripe ones are sticky and bitter.[1]
Use
editStar apples are typically eaten raw, though they can be fermented into alcoholic beverages or cooked into jams.[1]
