How to donate a dvd formatted lecture series on undergraduate calculus? edit

I would like to donate A video taped lecture series on Calculus which have been converted to dvd format. How do I go about doing this? The lecturer is willing to send the dvds to an appropriate uploader, but does not know much about computer programming himself. The lectures were taped at The University of Missouri - Kansas City.

Please send any information you have to: micheleforan@sbcglobal.net

Thankyou

This is a hugely generous offer. The problem we face at the moment is where to put such content, as the disk server storage costs alone are going to be significant. Still, there may be some significant support for this sort of content.
It should also be noted that Wikimedia projects generally try to avoid having MPEG content, mainly because of licensing restrictions by the MPEG Licensing Authority that would require us to charge a fee for placing the content on our servers that would have to be paid per user that accesses the content. There are volunteers, however, that would very much be willing to convert the video content to other formats that have a more open license structure compatable with Wikimedia projects, so it isn't as big of a deal as it may seem.
I'm going to make some enquiries on your behalf and see what we can do with an offer like this. --Rob Horning 08:18, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Article Construction edit

I was trying to construct an article in the chemistry section, but I couldn't put in any photos/diagrams how do I do that?

-Coulddousin

The article Help:Files provides a full description how to deal with images. Is the image you wanted to put in your article uploaded to Wikibooks or available on Wikimedia Commons? Embedding images from external servers is not allowed (the main reason is to prevent copyright infringement). --Derbeth talk 10:21, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Adding a Book to a Bookshelf edit

How do I add my book to a bookshelf? The instructions are not at all clear. Saying "be sure to add your book to a bookshelf" is not helpful if one is not told how to do it. I have started a book called American Literature, and I tried to place it in the Language and Literature bookshelf, but I could see no way to add it to the list of books there. Ugh!!!!! Logophile 16:45, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You go to Wikibooks:Language and literature bookshelf and click "edit" link in an appropriate section: [1]. --Derbeth talk 10:21, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I get a message that it is locked. Logophile 12:43, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Puzzling - should be ok for registered users - I just checked permissions and it is only locked to unregistered folk --Herby talk thyme 12:46, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I tried again. I can "view source" but I cannot edit. The message at the top of the screen continues to say that it is locked. Perhaps an administrator can add my book to the list. I want people to see it and to help with it. Logophile 15:48, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Embedding an Image from Commons edit

Okay, I have followed the instructions to a T. I even cut and paste the command straight from a Wikipedia article, and I just could not get an image onto my textbook page. I have spent way too long, trying and retrying and researching this problem. Logophile 08:27, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please give URL to this image. Otherwise it might be hard to help you. --Derbeth talk 10:21, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Support for images from Commons has sometimes been problematic in the past, however it should be fairly straight forward at the moment. I have included an example here on how to accomplish this using an image from Commons right here in this reply, which I hope you can copy. Make sure that you have the correct name of the file from Commons, which may be part of your problem. --Rob Horning 11:09, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Thanks. I tried a different image and it worked. I don't understand the problem, though, because the image I tried to copy is in a Wikipedia article, but when I put in the appropriate link here, no image appeared. Logophile 12:45, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

links to nl.wiktionary edit

Hi, I have been adding to the book Dutch and I would like to make links directly from Dutch words in the text to the nl.wiktionary. Is there an easy way to do that?

Try this: [[wikt:nl:word]] wikt:nl:word --Derbeth talk 21:23, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Full solutions to Calculus problems edit

I was wondering if there would be a interest in uploading fully worked out solutions to Calculus I & II problems similar to some of the problems found in Schaum's or REA problem solvers? I've put together about 100 problems in MS Word on Integration techniques showing detailed step by step methods to solve them.

Formatting them into Wikibook pages would require a fair amount of work but I don't think it would be impossible.

Before I got started though I'd like to know what people's thoughts are about this. Would this justify a new text book or should they be a extension of the existing Calculus textbook? Each of these solutions take up about a 1/2 to a full page in MS word so by uploading and formatting the lot of them it could easily fill up a couple hundred screens worth of content.

This sounds like a nice idea. However, we can only allow it if the steps shown in the book are by you (and not a book you bought) and you're releasing them under the GFDL. I've seen answer books here before, (either wikiversity or wikibooks seems fine for them) so I'd say putting it here is fine. I wouldn't mind putting in some work on this, I know how to do LaTeX formatting (a markup which makes it very easy to typeset mathematical problems. If you're still here, just respond and publicly say that you'll license them out under the GFDL, and I'll give you my e-mail. -Monktalk 19:18, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is a list of Nepal postal codes appropriate here? edit

Some editor at Wikipedia has typed in Wikipedia:List of postal codes in Nepal. I checked, and it's very difficult to find this on the web -- perhaps impossible unless your computer is set to whatever alphabet they use in Nepal. The article doesn't fit in Wikipedia and there's a deletion discussion going on now. Would Wikibooks be a proper spot for it? If you allow it in, you'll likely be getting others. If it were easy to find on the Web, I'd just want to delete it, but my heart goes out to all those letter writers and package senders distraught over not having the proper Nepalese postal code on their mail to Nepal. Can we not assist these needy people? I've asked over at Wikisource and it doesn't fit over there. Noroton 23:22, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, I just dont think that this fits here either. It certainly is admirable, but it doesnt qualify as textbook material. If we had a book on Nepalese geopolitical areas, this might make an acceptable appendix or something, but we dont have a book like that. Unfortunately, i think this is going to be deleted until the WMF creates a "wikigeography" or something. --Whiteknight (talk) (projects) 23:51, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I want to contact Computer Networking Writers (Please help) edit

Hi there,

I want to contact with the computer networking writers.

I am looking for help that how can I contact them directly?

Any help will be highly appreciated. Regards Bushra —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Bushib (talkcontribs) 07:12, 9 Mar 2007 (UTC)

Unfortunately no contributors are currently active at that book. It looks like, however, on of the contributors, User:Annieyc 2002, has e-mail activated. Go to that user's user page, look on the left side of the screen, click "E-mail this user" towards the bottom of the navigation bar, and then type away! --Iamunknown 07:23, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
