The Mega Drive Mini 2 is predated by the 2019 Mega Drive Mini.[1]

On May 27, 2022 the console was hinted at with a tweet featuring a photo of a Mega Drive controller themed cake.[2][3]

The console was formally announced on June 3, 2022.[4] A planned Japanese release date of October 27, 2022 was given.[5] The given launch price of the system in Japan was 9,980 Japanese yen.[3]
