Getting around Los Angeles by Rail/Metro Rail/Stations
Metro Rail includes 70 stations. Nine of them are termini, three are transfer stations, and six are shared by the Red and Purple Lines, also known as a concurrency.
Station Basics

A station is a stop that a train stops at. For example, Gold Line trains will stop at Los Angeles Union Station. The doors will open at Los Angeles Union Station for passengers to exit and enter, then the train will continue on its way.
Terminus
editA terminus is the final stop on a line. For the Gold Line, the north terminus is Sierra Madre Villa. This means that the final station that Gold Line trains stop at is Sierra Madre Villa. At that point, the trains either go out of service or start in the other direction. Following is a list of termini.

Note: The Metro Blue Line (see map above) starts at 7th Street/Metro Center, continues south, and loops around Long Beach before returning north to 7th Street/Metro Center. A Blue Line train would stop at Anaheim, 5th Street, 1st Street, Long Beach Transit Mall (which Metro officially recognizes as the terminus), and Pacific, then go back to Anaheim in a northerly direction.
Transfer Station

A transfer station is a station that two or more lines pass through. These stations allow passengers to transfer between rail lines at no additional charge.

Concurrency

A concurrency occurs when two or more lines share the same track. The Red and Purple Lines share track between their termini, Los Angeles Union Station, and Wilshire/Vermont. This means that passengers bound for North Hollywood or Wilshire/Western board on the same platform at concurrency stations, and passengers bound for Los Angeles Union Station board on the same platform as well. Technically, since the concurrency extends all the way to Los Angeles Union Station, the termini for both lines, it doesn't matter which line train one takes if he/she is bound for Los Angeles Union Station.
