A waffle maker (also known as a waffle iron) is a type of kitchen appliance used to make waffles. It usually consists of two hinged metal plates, moulded to create the square indentations found on waffles. The batter is poured between the plates, and heated to make the waffle. Commonly these come equipped with an internal heating element, although waffle irons exist that do not depend on electricity; they generally are held over an open flame.
Rectangular shaped waffle irons often can be converted to a griddle (or flat iron) by removing the iron plating and flipping it over. This is ideally used to make pitchy breads (specifically pancakes), but can also double as an ungreased frying pan (grease will generally run into the spill groove; batter should be too thick). Oddly shaped or patterned irons usually lack this feature, as they will heat unevenly. Check the manual or manufacturer's website before attempting this conversion.
