A skewer is a long, thin, sharp strip of metal or wood. It is most commonly used to pierce foods in order to cook them, as with kebabs. It is also a handy tool for checking the doneness of baked goods by piercing them. Toothpicks or cocktail picks are small skewers made of wood and sometimes plastic.
