Gem squash is a variety of summer squash.[1]

Characteristics

It is a small, round summer squash, about the size of a tennis ball, with a dark green skin and yellow flesh.[2] The skin can be either quite thick or thin enough to eat, depending on when the squash was harvested.[1] "Baby gems" are smaller and closer to ping-pong balls in size.[1]

Seasonality

The squash can be harvested in the summer, for a thinner-skinned vegetable, or in early autumn for a thicker-skinned squash similar to a winter squash.[1]

Selection and storage

Gem squash is widespread in warm climates such as South Africa.[2] There, it is steamed, boiled, or cooked over a stew pot.[2] It can also be roasted like other squashes.
