Writing Adolescent Fiction/Character names/Japanese

Usage note

edit

In Japan, a person’s family name comes before the given name. Family names are typically passed down from the parent with higher hierarchy standing within their respective families, which may be patrilineal or matrilineal. Before the 1868 Meiji Restoration, only kuge, samurai, and the nobility were legally allowed to publicly use their family names. Those who belonged to a clan would use clan names, and other commoners with family names would only use them in private, while those without a family name might use their origin place as an attributive. Post-Meiji era sees all documented citizens registered under a family name, while the old clan system was abolished.

Older generations of Japanese women are more likely to have names ending in -ko and -e, while Japanese women born after 1980 tend to have wider range of names with other endings. A notable exception to this trend is the name Michiko, which surged in popularity in 1989 following the ascend of Shouda Michiko as the Empress consort of Japan as the wife of Akihito, the 125th Emperor of Japan reigning from 7 January 1989 to 30 April 2019. Though, before that, she became the Crown Princess of Japan in 1959.

Likewise, older generations of Japanese men are more likely to have name suffixes such as -rou, -ichi, -ichirou, -hiko, -o, -maro, and -maru than younger generations do.

Although there is no legal limit to how many characters a full name may contain, most forms (both paper and digital) in Japan provide empty boxes for only 6–7 characters. The vast majority of Japanese names are 4–5 characters long. Japan as a whole does not recognize the usage of middle names, and there is no spot on legal documents in Japan for middle names, therefore all Japanese nationals’ full names are only 2 words long. However, Japanese diaspora born overseas may take a liking to and have middle names, usually by adding Western names somewhere in the full name.

Another unique difference is that the Japanese have a very different perception of any name’s gender impression, what kanji can go in names, and a very lax grapheme–phoneme system, compared to the rest of the Sinosphere. A good basic example of this is: multiple names with the same reading (pronunciation and kana) but different kanji are completely different names, multiple names with the same kanji but different readings are slightly different names, which can only be called “the same name” in written-only contexts (still counts as different), while two people whose given names have the same kanji and same reading count as having the same name.
