The Declaration of Independence was drafted in Philadelphia in 1775, sparking the American Revolution. Pennsylvania officially ratified the Constitution on December 12, 1787, making it the second state to do so. During the Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg was fought in the south-central part of the state.
