ME...
My name is Rob Carey and I live in Charlottesville, VA. I am originally from Arlington, VA and graduated from James Madison in 2005. I graduated with a History Degree, and since there are limited jobs that require a history degree, I am returning to school to teach. I hope to teach 4th,5th, or 6th grade and eventually high school history. I enjoy teaching very much, and now that I am out of the "what do I want to do with my life?" stage, I am fully committed to it. I currently run youth programs for the City of Charlottesville and coach basketball at a local high school.
I was married last June to my wife, Dena. We bought a house three weeks after the wedding, and have just remodeled the kitchen. Needless to say, we rarely have a chance to sit down. We have a Golden Retriever named Brooklyn who keeps us active, and if theres a tennis ball in sight, you better be ready to throw it for her. Thats pretty much my life in a nutshell...pictures to come!
Philosophy on Education...
I believe that education should be fun. In my mind, every party involved should have a great experience with learning. Whether its a student who cant wait to get to his/her next class or a teacher who loves to lesson plan, it should be fun and exciting. This is why an interactive element should be added to every classroom. Whether its technolgy, such as computers, webcams, and educational video games, or group discussions and field trips. The interactive element turns the students into "explorers" and the teachers into facilitators. The teachers job is to facilitate discussions, communication, and debate; all elements of a healthy classroom. It gives the students choice and freedom, two things that students need to progress. To me, the days of overhead projectors and lectures should be replaced by 21st century technology and communication. This would make the classroom experience more exciting for the student and the teacher.
