My name is Catherine Byrd and I am attending Old Dominion University. I am studying Elementary Education. I was born in Maryland but was raised in Newport News, Virginia. I have a wonderful family that includes a younger brother and two older brothers. I have three handsome nephews and three beautiful nieces. Both of my parents come from large families so I am use to being around lots of children and I believe that was an influence on me wanting to be a teacher. I love children but I also love animals and I have two magnificent dogs named Kobe and Cosmo.

My Philosophy of Education

I believe that everyone is not born to be a teacher. Teachers are special people that guide the young minds of the future. I believe that each student is different and learns differently. Different ways of presenting information to students should be practiced within the classroom. I believe that the best way children learn is through a hands on approach. Children learn to appreciate the information they have learned when they can have fun learning it while also learning to apply the information to everyday life. One of my favorite quotes is by Alvin Toffler and he says, "The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn."
