Life Leading Me Here
In September 2007 I left a fairly high paying job as a Food and Beverage Manager to come back to school. It was a hard choice but ultimately a good one. I need to feel like I am at least attempting to make an impact in this world. What better way to do that than to help influence the minds of our future? I’m the first to admit I’m a bit idealistic.
Life As It Is
I have been married to the most patient, beautiful and giving woman for nearly 6 years now. We have a 3 year old little girl who has me wrapped around her little finger. I build sets for the TCC theatre by day and bartend by night. There is never a dull moment in my life. I average 5 hours of sleep a night and wouldn’t have it any other way! I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if it were any different
Life As It Will Be
I am a Spanish Education major. I plan on getting my undergrad in 2011 and applying for the master’s program here at ODU and finish that by 2012. I’d like to go back to my High School and teach theatre there. I am a Spanish major because it will leave doors open for me as far as getting a job directly after school. Because there is not a praxis test for theatre, one just needs an endorsement to teach it.
Education
I have an Associates of Arts degree from Tidewater Community College
Hobbies
I like to play soccer, golf and surf. Right now I only play soccer (it’s free and I need the exercise). I’m way into politics. I like to read anything on history, religion (not religious) or Harry Potter... Who doesn’t?
My Teaching Philosophy
I am open to learn everything I can about this subject, but I guess right off the way I feel is that; teachers are there to teach learning. By this I mean it is fundamentally a teacher’s job to instruct their students on how to learn. The greatest tool students can walk away with when leaving their schools is a desire to know more and to know how to obtain that information. Teachers should inspire their student to seek knowledge. The bottom line is that 20 years from now they will be teaching entirely new things in completely new ways. The only way to keep up is to seek and absorb knowledge. That cannot be measured by a letter grade or by teaching so that a student can pass some test. They need the inspiration. Told you I was an idealist! -I plan on being an active teacher. I won’t teach from a desk or a chair. I want to be up and moving and show students that even the most mundane things can be made interesting if put into the right light. -I want to do it by a combination of lecture and group assignments. -I will stay current on technology. Kids respond to it and they need those tools to continue to be competitive in the world. -Diversity is something I could go on forever about so I’ll just say this: Everyone should be afforded the same opportunities to excel in whatever they want to do. I believe that the bar should be raised across the board and that those who do not express a desire, after a certain point, in academics should be moved to a trade or something that does interest them. Those trades should have the bar raised as well. If one is looking at becoming a mechanic then they should have to not only learn about cars but about how they affect the environment and what can be done to lessen those affects. Study aerodynamics and engineering’s as related to cars. I plan on writing my first writing assignment on this subject so I will stop there. I just think that our entire education system should be revamped into something that will put out not only the best scholars but the best everything.
