The Future of Leadership: A Class at Idaho State University

From January through March of 2023, a class of 32 undergraduate and graduate students and members of the Pocatello community participated in an experimental course in the Master's of Business Administration program at Idaho State University. Entitled "The Future of Leadership," the course was built around a visit to Pocatello and masterclass presented by Dr. Anthony Klotz, who predicted and coined the term "The Great Resignation" in May 2021. During his visit, Dr. Klotz also gave a presentation to the Pocatello community and shared his insights on ISU's Bengal Business Radio Show with Dr. Shane Hunt.

In preparation for Dr. Klotz's visit and masterclass, the instructor of this course, Dr. Alex Bolinger, led participants through an overview of many of the hottest topics in the future of work: "quiet quitting," leading boomerang employees, navigating the challenges and opportunities created by the emergence of artificial intelligence, and retaining and engaging employees in the midst and aftermath of the Great Resignation. For the class's final assignment, students worked together to write this Wikibook, The Future of Leadership. The students in the class worked in small groups and each wrote chapters that discussed the previously described hot topics in the future of work, as well as tackling ongoing questions such as the efficacy of moving to a 32-hour workweek, managing hybrid teams, and negotiating pay equity in a market where job seekers appear to have the upper hand.

The challenge of writing a book about the future of work at a particular moment in time is that its content risks becoming dated relatively quickly. Our class's goal in writing a Wikibook about the Future of Leadership is that the format is dynamic and open to update as circumstances and information changes. We commend this book to you as a starting point for learning more about key considerations in The Future of Leadership.
