Playable characters

The biggest change in Super Mario 64 DS is the addition of the three new characters alongside Mario: Luigi, Wario, and Yoshi. Not only do all the four characters have different special abilities and power ups, but certain characters are mandatory for some star missions.

When beginning the game, you will start as Yoshi as Mario, Luigi, and Wario were captured and locked away in Peach's room by Bowser and his army. You need to find the corresponding keys to unlock their characters. Once you do, you can switch between the characters by entering the room they were locked inside. To switch back to Yoshi, you must have the character re-enter the room they were locked in.

Mario

edit

Mario is the hapless hero of the group and controls almost identically to himself in Super Mario 64. He is the shortest in height, but his swim, speed, power, and jumping abilities are all exactly average across the board.

Power Up

Mario is the only character that can gain two power ups from red switch blocks: a Power Flower and a feather. His Power Flower ability makes him inflate himself into a balloon. Pressing B will help him float upward while pressing R will immediately deflate Mario to normal. The feather gives Mario the Wing Cap, which gives him the ability to fly. Mario can take off the ground by doing a triple jump or shooting himself out of a cannon. His flight controls are inverted, meaning pressing Up will make him go down and vice versa. Yoshi must go to Goomboss Battle, reach the top, and fight King Goomboss to rescue Mario.

Wall Kick

Wall kicking is pressing against a wall in mid-air and jumping off it to propel yourself away from the wall. Run towards a wall and press B to leap into the air, then press B once more as Mario reaches the wall to jump off of it in the opposite direction. With two walls close together, Mario can climb to the top with his successive wall kicks.

Luigi

edit

The second banana to Mario is his younger, twin brother, Luigi. He's needed to grab some stars, as well as Wario. He is the second-highest jumper (but best) of the four, but has slightly less attack power than Mario and Wario. Luigi is almost as average as his brother, except in jumping. The reason he's slightly weaker is because he moves slower when carrying enemies and is skinner, but throws them the same distance. Other than that, their power are equal. He's the best and fastest runner and swimmer. Mario must go to Big Boo's Haunt, then enter a Luigi painting, and fight King Boo (mistakenly called Big Boo) to free his brother.

Power Up

Luigi gains the ability to turn invisible with the Power Flower. It will allow him to walk through certain types of walls and enemies will go right through him, similar to the Vanish Cap in the original game. Except he can't go through ice.

Backwards Somersault

All characters can perform the backwards somersault by holding down R to crouch and pressing B to jump backwards. Luigi's backwards somersault is not only the highest, but he also slowly descends with a spin jump. It's useful for traversing over large gaps.

Water Run

Holding Y while running toward a body of water will allow Luigi to dash across the surface for a few seconds, due to his light body. Landing from a jump or stopping will make Luigi drop into the water.

Scuttle

Holding B while jumping allows Luigi to kick his legs for a little extra distance. He can only do this during a single or double jump. Him and his brother long jump father and triple-jump higher than Yoshi and tied with Wario in height.

Wario

edit

Mario's greedy antithesis rival, Wario was also invited to Peach's Castle as well and is required to obtain stars, like Luigi. His power and weight are really amazing and he is also the toughest, but his jumps are really short and his running and swimming are pitiful. After defeating Bowser In The Fire Sea, Luigi must go to the second floor, get a power flower to go through the mirror and enter a Wario painting. There, he must fight Chief Chilly to rescue Wario.

Power Up

Wario's body gets coated with metal by the Power Flower, similar to the Metal Cap in the original game. He can run into some enemies and take no damage from their attacks, like Invisible Luigi. His extra weight allows him to walk underwater and resist high winds and currents. His height is tied with Luigi's.

Extra Strength

Wario is the only character strong enough to break black-colored bricks as well as other certain formidable large objects that others can't. His strength also lets him punch, kick, and throw enemies the farthest as well as ground pound pegs once instead of three times. In VS. Mode, he can knock out opponents slightly longer, grab, spin, and throw them, like how Bowser is defeated. He can grab and throw signs and ground-pound them once, while others do it twice. His height is tied with Luigi's.

Yoshi

edit

This cute, green dinosaur is Mario and Luigi's childhood company friend and the first default character you control. He has the highest jump of the four, but he cannot punch/kick or grab enemies and objects and his ground-pound can't defeat/break bricks or Boos. He has average running and swimming. He's taller than the others.

Power Up

Yoshi's mouth fills up with heat thanks to the Power Flower. Pressing A will make him exhale flames. His fire breath will melt most enemies as well as some forms of ice (used for two missions, one for Snowman's Land and Cool, Cool Mountain) that others can't break.

Swallow Enemies

Instead of punching, the A button makes Yoshi shoot out his tongue. If an enemy is caught by his tongue, he'll retract it to his mouth. Pressing A again will spit the enemy out while pressing R swallows the enemy, causing Yoshi to lay an egg that will follow him. To throw the egg at a target, press A. Yoshi can also swallow fire and spit it out, but he can only hold one flame at a time. Not all enemies can be converted to eggs or even swallowed.

Flutter Jump

Holding B while jumping gives Yoshi more air time with a flutter jump. It not only lasts higher and longer than Luigi's scuttle, but also gives him a little extra height to reach far and high places. He can only perform this while single or double jumping.

VS Mode

VS Mode (also called Versus Mode) is a competitive wireless multiplayer mode that is exclusive to the DS version of Super Mario 64. It allows up to four players to fight and compete in battles to earn the most stars and coins on a given map. There are four maps available. Players can also attack and steal one another to force their opponents to drop out stars, wings, as well as use power-ups for aid.

To reach VS Mode, the player has go to the main menu and select the orange VS icon on the left side of the screen. The DS will begin looking for other players. For VS Mode, you only need one game card. The other players can use their Nintendo DS to download the game by going to DS Download Play from the DS main menu and the game will be found. They will be different colored Yoshis (red, blue, and yellow). The person (host) with the game card is the default Green Yoshi. All these Yoshis come from Super Mario World. It is possible for other players to continue playing after one person quits after round (not while playing the round). For example, if player 2 (Red Yoshi) quits after a round and two other players continue, then there'll be Green and Blue (player 3) without Red).

After everyone has tapped the "Touch to Start" button, the person with the game card, or the person who started the session, will decide which maps to play on. Press select to reach the controller settings. Press start to reach sound options and toggle the backlight on or off.

VS Mode maps can be also played in single-player mode to practice alone to know where all the stars, coins, caps are.

The Plumbers' Caps

edit

Caps are special items only available in VS Mode. Yoshis can transform into Mario, Luigi, or Wario. Each cap is specific to one of the characters. If a character picks up a different cap (e.g. Mario picks up a Wario cap), then that character will transform into the one represented by the cap (e.g. Mario will turn into Wario). A transformed character takes on all of the new character's abilities. If a transformed character gets hit by another player, then the transformed character will return back to it's original form. If all players attack each other at the same time, then all will get hurt, rather than just one.

Characters

edit

Each character has one or more special abilities that are only available in VS Mode.

Mario

edit
Wall Kick

This isn't an attack, but it allows him to jump from wall to wall in a small space, which is useful for climbing and evading enemies. Run towards a wall and press B to leap into the air, then press B once more as Mario reaches the wall to jump off of it in the opposite direction. Pressing B whenever Mario is near a surface will allow Mario to jump higher and higher as he bounces from one wall to the next.

Luigi

edit

Luigi has three moves.

Scuttle

Hold B to run faster. Especially useful when trying to run away from nearby enemy players.

Backward Somersault

Press R, then B to do a backwards somersault. This can be used to quickly change direction. If someone is directly behind Luigi or running towards him, this will allow Luigi to roll through them safely.

Water Run

Luigi has the ability to run on water for a short period of time. Hold Y while running towards water. Jump on the water or fall onto it and Luigi will float for a bit before falling into the water.

Wario

edit
Swing and Fling

A VS Mode exclusive ability, Wario has only one ability. He can knock out opponents slightly longer, grab, spin, and throw enemies by approaching them and pressing A to grab them. Then press the Neutral|Dpad in a circle, over and over, to swing them. Press A to let go when Wario is swinging them quickly to throw them really far, just like how you defeat Bowser. This is actually one of the best moves in VS Mode and can stun some opponents.

Yoshis

edit
Swallowing

Yoshis can use their tongue to swallow other players and spit them out. This damages them and knocks their star out. Press A to swallow nearby players or objects. Press A while holding things in Yoshi's mouth to force him to spit them out. Though they cannot swallow transformed characters or characters with caps. Yoshi (slightly higher than Luigi's scuttle) can jump really high with the flutter kick Press and hold the B button.

Courses

edit

There are four courses to play in VS Mode.

Castle Grounds

edit

In this course, there are some exclusive parts added in. When you go toward the 150 star cannon (see Castle Cannon, Roof, and Yoshi's Reward under Secrets), there is a staircase leading to an elevator (see Hazy Maze Cave) that will eventually lead to a power star. In addition, all the doors are blocked with red velvet rope. Also, there is a chain chomp bouncing across the front of the castle and there's a moving platform added to the lake, pond, and moat.

Sunshine Isles

edit

This course is in Peach's Rec. Room in the main adventure. In the main game, only Mario can use the wing cap, but in this version, there is a ! block with a feather in it that all the characters can use. Yoshis grow wings on their backs like in Super Mario World. In addition to what is regularly there, all of the enemies and objects have disappeared.

Princess' Secret Slide

edit

The smallest level in this mode accessed in the character selection room. Stars here don't have star spheres and falling off causes players to return to the beginning of the slide. The end is the best place for attacking opponents. There's a hidden grey brick. To access it exit the tunnel, and turn right to long jump.

Battle Fort

edit

This is the largest course hidden in the boo's courtyard under the three brick blocks. In this version, all of the enemies are removed, except the black rolling balls, but only Wario can destroy these. This stage also has yellow boxes containing feathers.

Power Flower

The Power Flower is an item exclusive to Super Mario 64 DS that allows the character to use a special power for a short period; Yoshi breathes fire, Mario Inflates and floats, Luigi can walk through gates, and Wario becomes metal and invincible.

Rabbits

One of the Toads has lost the keys to all the minigames! Once you talk to the Toad in the Rec. Room, the rabbits will appear all over the castle both inside and the castle grounds! These rabbits hold the minigame keys. Similar to MIPS, who appeared in the basement twice (when you have 15 and 50 power stars, respectively) in the original game, giving 2 power stars, they'll run around when you get near them, making them hard to grab (and in Yoshi's case, stuff in his mouth, which is a bit easier). Catching them will earn you a key and the option to save, instead of stars. Each character has seven color-coded rabbits to catch, for a whole total of 28 and their color and locations vary from character to character. Wario catches orange, Luigi catches green, Mario catches purple, and Yoshi catches yellow. It will require all 150 stars to catch every one since you'll need the castle ground's cannon unlocked to catch Luigi's last one. Yoshi has eight, because one is for opening keys to unlock the castle's front door, at the beginning of the game. These rabbits also appear in Super Mario 3D Land. The following table below shows the locations of all the rabbits, the minigames unlocked, and the amount of power stars required for the rabbits to appear and minigames to unlock.

Glowing Rabbits

edit

After collecting 8 Power Stars, there will be eight glowing rabbits that will randomly appear in place of the ordinary ones that have already been caught. These rabbits have white sparkles on their body and red eyes. You can collect all of them with any character in any part of the castle, however, there is a much faster way. Switch to Yoshi and step out of the castle through the front door since six of his rabbits are out there. The seventh one can be found in the basement next to the Lethal Lava Land and Shifting Sand Land paintings. Just repeatedly enter and exit the castle to quickly summon eight glowing rabbits. The final rabbit states "It's the fastest and oldest of the family" while each rabbit then before states that they are "the second-fastest of my eight rabbits". After catching all eight, you will get the key to unlock the last white door in the character selection room, next to Wario's door, which contains a secret power star.

Trivia

edit
  • Wario is the only character that you can catch all the rabbits with without draining the moat.

Sunshine Isles

Sunshine Isles is an adventure and multiplayer level that is exclusive to Super Mario 64 DS. Once you get 1 power star, go to Peach's Playroom (the place where you can play minigames) to find the Sunshine Isles portrait. When you enter, you'll notice that you're on a little island with an empty sphere surrounded by some coins and a couple of trees. You'll also hear music that might be familiar to you! There is only one Star to collect in this small stage. To get the star, you must find all 5 Silver Stars. While you're at it, you can try shell surfing! You can get a shell from the yellow ! box. The course is based on and named after Super Mario Sunshine, with the course's music being an arrangement of Delfino Plaza's theme.

Silver Star Locations

edit
  • Silver Star #1: On the main island with the sleeping Piranha Plant.
  • Silver Star #2: Jump off the island and turn around. It's in an alcove.
  • Silver Star #3: On the north island behind the big main island. Climb up the tree to get it.
  • Silver Star #4: At the west island that has no tree.
  • Silver Star #5: Klepto the Condor is flying around with the last Silver Star in its talons.

Multiplayer

edit

It is the second of the four courses in multiplayer, the music has been changed, and all of the enemies are removed. In addition, the yellow box that contained a green Koopa Shell now contains wings (like Battle Fort) which any character can use whereas in the main game, only Mario gets wings.

The Secret of Battle Fort

Battle Fort (also called The Secret of Battle Fort) is an adventure and multiplayer level exclusive to Super Mario 64 DS that is accessible only after you unlock a hero with a cap, since Yoshi cannot break the red bricks blocking the entrance. This stage is found in the courtyard with the boos.

Battle Fort is filled with Big Steelies that will knock you down, Goombas to get in your way, Bob-ombs that drop from the sky, Heave Hos to fling you incredibly high, and a Chuckya that will chuck you to somewhere in the stage, where you could get hit by a Big Steely. In order to get the star here, you will need to track down the five silver stars.

Silver Star Locations

edit
  • Silver Star #1: High up in the middle of the map. Climb the pole or bypass the Chuckya to get it.
  • Silver Star #2: A Goomba at the north edge of the level has it.
  • Silver Star #3: A Goomba at the base of the pole has it.
  • Silver Star #4: Hidden in a red brick in a trench at the northwest.
  • Silver Star #5: Hidden in a red brick at the southeast corner of the level.

The only thing that you can do here is punch them all out and see what they contain. The touchscreen map is very useful here, so keep an eye on it as you run around.

Multiplayer

edit

Battle Fort is the biggest of the four courses in multiplayer and all of the enemies have been removed, except for the black rolling balls which only Wario can break. Also, like Sunshine Isles, this course has yellow boxes with feathers that any character can use, whereas in adventure mode, only Mario gets wings.

Goomboss Battle

After obtaining 8 power stars, you will be able to open the door in the back of the Rec. Room. There is a picture of Mario in the room behind it. Going inside will get you into the stage.

There are two stars you can obtain in this level: one is from collecting a star switch, and the other from finding all the 8 red coins.

The Battle

edit

To reach Goomboss, you will need to reach the red X on the map.

Once you enter the level, slide down the slide, and you'll land on a checkerboard-like floor. Head to the left and jump over some tree stumps that move up and down. Don't go into the purple mist, it's poisonous and takes one hit point every few seconds.

Keep on the left until you meet a Piranha Plant. Kill it if you need to, then run past it onto the next tree stump, which has a pole coming out of it. Climb all the way up to the top of the pole, and a 1-Up will come out. Jump off, and head up the bridge. At the end, there are three stumps. One has another Piranha Plant, one has a Spinning Heart (run through it if you need to gain some health), and the final one has a hole in it. Jump down the hole to face Goomboss.

To defeat Goomboss, you will need to run around behind him, then eat a Goomba that is running behind him. Then, you can either spit it out or make an egg to hit Goomboss. It will take 3 hits to defeat him, but he gets faster with every hit. Upon defeating him, you will get the key to Mario's room, unlocking him. When playing as Mario, Luigi, or Wario, Goomboss will create a new row of Goombas in front of him. You have to punch the Goombas into Goomboss in order to attack him. After attacking him for the second time, Goomboss will create more Goombas to both in front of and behind him. Punching one more Goomba at Goomboss will defeat him. If you punch him in his face, you can obtain a Super Mushroom.

Red Coins

edit

In order to collect all the 8 red coins, you need to have unlocked all the characters unlocked and the ? Blocks to be able to do this.

  1. When you start, go down the same path as you would if you were going to fight Goomboss, but turn right just before the tree stump with the pole. You'll find a metal grille which you can hold on to. Make your way along the grille, collecting the coins as you go. The third coin is the first red coin.
  2. Head back the way you came and go up the pole. Instead of going on the bridge, make your way to the end of the lone branch. There is another red coin there.
  3. Slide back down the pole. Instead of going to the path with the Piranha Plant, take the other path, which goes to a tree stump that moves up and down. Get on that, and at the very top is the third coin.
  4. Go back to the Piranha Plant. Head right to the two moving platforms, going out to the lone stump. There, you will find a Black Brick Block, and a Goomba with Wario's cap (if you are not playing as Wario). Get the cap or use a Super Mushroom, and punch open the block, which contains another coin.
  5. Head all the way back over the three moving stumps. Go down the checkerboard path to the tree stump with a log in it, and turn left. In the middle is a platform which tilts depending on where you are, and in the middle of that is another red coin.
  6. Get hit by a Goomba if you came in as Mario, or grab Mario's cap nearby otherwise. Jump carefully on the tilting platforms to reach the stump with a ? Block. Hit it, grab the Power Flower, and quickly float up to the very top of the log to the right. The next red coin is on the top.
  7. Jump all the way down onto the side of the tree stump next to the rest of the course. Get hit by a Goomba if you came in as Luigi, or grab Luigi's cap nearby otherwise. Head back to the Power Flower, grab it, then run back to that side of the tree stump and backflip up to a hole in the stump covered by another grille. A red coin is there.
  8. Grab another Power Flower if you need to in order to get out. Head to the stump with the log in it, and go down the checkerboard path. Turn right and go down the pathway with the Brick Blocks and moving platforms, and there will be a Piranha Plant nearby. Past that, there are many moving stumps. Go to the last one, which has another Piranha Plant and the final red coin.

Go back to the stump right before all those moving stumps, and there's your star.

Switch Star

edit

This star requires only Mario.

Go down the path to right before the three moving stumps. Head down the checkerboard path, but turn right up the sloped path before the stump with the log. Be careful of the Piranha Plant, jump over the four tilting platforms, and you'll land on another path. Head down it to the switch, press it, and then run all the way to the end of the path and wall jump up to the top of the cage. At the top will be the star.

Big Boo Battle

Once you obtain 15 power stars (it is possible with 14 stars, but it is much harder), go to the courtyard and the cage that leads to Big Boo's Haunt. Remember that choosing one of stars 2-7 is recommended for this. When you arrive, enter the main mansion, go upstairs, and enter the door on the far right. You should arrive near a red ? box. Stand on top of it, and triple jump, backflip, or wall-kick to the 3rd floor.

Enter the door, and go into the Luigi painting after that.

What's this? You seem to have arrived at a merry-go-round maze. Here, if you go through the wrong door, you will end up at the very start, and if you fall down a bottomless pit, the same thing will happen. You can't die by either of these ways.

Instead of going back and forth, take the door to the right when you enter. This should lead you to another area. Go to the left door this time. Again, another room. Go to the right, then left. Then run like the wind until you reach 3 platforms. Get on them in order, and go in the hole.

You get into a room with a large mirror. Go up to it, and King Boo will appear! Either punch him from the behind or ground pound him 3 times. He will give you a Luigi key, which opens up Luigi's door.

8 Red Coins

edit

To get all the 8 red coins, you need to have unlocked all the characters and the ? Blocks to do this.

  1. Right when you start, there is a red coin on the far side of the room.
  2. Get the Mario cap next to the left door if you aren't currently Mario. Go out the right door, and you can see two coins. One is on the corner of the middle platform, and one is on the right bridge.
  3. Go to the top door. The right platform has a coin on the corner.
  4. Go to the middle platform - be careful, the center of the middle platform tilts all over the place - and grab the Power Flower within the ? Block, which lets you float. Float to the top-right corner of the room, where another coin lies.
  5. Head through the right door. There are four checkerboard platforms here, and the first and third ones lead directly into coins, so just ride all the platforms to the end and back. Get the Wario cap while you're at it, or get hit by an enemy if you came in as Wario.
  6. Go through the top door. Straight to your right is a Black Brick Block containing the final red coin.

The star is on the same platform as the last red coin, but on the other side.

Secret Star

edit

This star is hidden behind a painting. You need to have Luigi to get this.

Go into the third room, and grab the Power Flower. Now you have to run fast. One mistake and you have to do this all over again.

Once you have invisibility power, run all the way to the room with the very long bridge. Instead of jumping on the platforms however, keep running and jump straight through the painting, where the star awaits. You can get out just by jumping out.

Chief Chilly Challenge

Once you have rescued Luigi and have gained access to the second floor of the castle, turn right, and you should see a door with a star symbol on it. Open the door and you'll get to a room with a mirror. As Luigi, there will be Power Flowers here. Jump up and grab one of them, then run through the mirror. Manoeuvre your way to jump into the picture frame that has Wario's image on it. Once you're in, go down the slide, and the wind will blow you up. You'll then land on a platform. Jump over all the tilting platforms, then jump onto the platform that moves back and forward. You'll land on the next part. Turn right and freefall your way into the lake below. Jump over the next few parts, then find your way over the moving path that goes up, down and all around. Once you're on the next part, there are some elevating ice blocks, get your way all the way to the top. You should then see a big hole. Jump down there.

And there you go, a big frozen Bully. Now, what you have to do is punch or ground-pound Chief Chilly until he falls off the edge. He'll come back on and bits of the platform will diminish. Keep doing that until you're left with not much, and then he'll eventually fall off.

Note: Once you've won, you can get an extra hidden star by going through the other door in the mirrored room.

8 Red Coins

edit

To get all the 8 red coins, you will need to have unlocked the ? Blocks to do this.

  1. The first coin is located on the moving bridge right after the tilting platforms.
  2. The second coin is quite tricky to get. After the bridge, turn right and jump off the ice, where the wind will carry you upwards. The coin is in the middle of the square of coins, so you have to aim correctly. If you fall down to the lower ice, go back and try again.
  3. Fall down to the lower platform and jump in the freezing cold water, where the third coin is. Don't stay in too long, it takes your health away.
  4. The fourth coin is right in the middle of the next platform with all the bullies.
  5. Jump onto the moving platforms. The second moving platform will line up right below the next red coin, so stay in the middle of it and wait. The same thing will happen with the fourth moving platform.
  6. Move off the platforms and head around the mountain, where there is a Mario cap. Climb to near the top, and get the Power Flower in the ? Block. Float quickly over to the lone platform, and the seventh coin is right in the centre.
  7. Float back to the mainland and get hit by a snowman to go back to your normal self. Get another Power Flower to turn invisible and run into the cage, where the final red coin is.

Grab another Power Flower if you need it to get out, and head around just a little bit further than where Mario's cap is. The star is there.

Secret Star

edit

You need to have unlocked Wario and the ? Blocks before this. Once you have done that, grab Wario's cap just after the tilting platforms and head over the moving bridge. Go to the left, grab the Power Flower to become metal, and run quickly but carefully over the bridge. Normally you would be blown off, but as you're metal, you aren't. Break the Black Brick Block at the end of the path and collect the next star. You can get back with another Power Flower.

Minigames/Yoshi

Yoshi's minigames are puzzle games. All of them require some thought.

Wanted!

edit

It’s easy to get lost in a crowd! Find the one who disappeared and touch him. There he is!

In this minigame, you need to find the character in the crowd that matches the picture of the character on the top screen (Yoshi, Mario, Luigi, or Wario). If you find him, you will get five seconds added onto your timer. If you choose the wrong character, you will lose ten seconds from the timer. Sometimes levels are harder because the characters move. In some levels, the characters are trying to get past each other.

Loves Me...?

edit

Play this mini-game for advice on your love life! Pluck the petals to find out how your crush feels about you.

No real point of this minigame, as your score isn't recorded. You just pluck some flower petals off a flower, only to find out your crush actually HATES you! Anyway, you need to touch the flower petals to pluck the flower. Every time you touch a petal, the words "Loves Me" or "Loves Me Not" appear on the screen, and will alternate back and forth. This will show you what words will come up every time you pluck a flower:

  • Loves Me
  • Loves Me Not
  • Really Loves Me!
  • Really Loves Me... Not!

Sometimes there's a glitch where there are only 1 or 2 petal(s) and when you complete the level on the next one, it plucks off all the petals instantly and ends with the "Loves Me Not" screen, but without the text.

Hide and Boo Seek

edit

Rub the Touch Screen where the Boos are hiding! For the first 15 levels, you get 3 seconds to find them. After that, you only get 2 seconds.

At the start of this minigame, a Boo will turn the lights off, and you will need to find all of the Boos before time runs out. To find them, rub the Touch Screen where they are hiding. In later levels, more Boos will appear, making it harder to find them all. For the first fifteen levels, you get three seconds to find them, but after that, you only get two seconds!

Puzzle Panel

edit

Match the Touch Screen picture to the top screen. Touch a panel to turn over the surrounding panels. Harder levels will take more turns to solve.

In this minigame, there will be a picture with different panels on them (Mushrooms and Cape Feathers). You will need to touch a panel to flip it over (as well as the panels surrounding it) to match the Touch Screen picture with the top screen picture. Harder levels require more turns to solve. You have three chances to match the pictures.

Boom Box

edit

Each time you open a treasure chest, you’ll hear a sound. Open 2 chests with the same sound. Win by matching all the pairs!

There are six treasure chests that make different sounds when you open them. Touch two treasure chests that make the exact same sound. You have three chances to match them all up. In some levels, there are eight treasure chests. In some levels, the sounds are very hard to distinguish from one another (requiring you to pay attention to which speaker the sound comes out of).

Tox Box Shuffle

edit

Oh, no! Yoshi’s trapped in a Tox Box! Find which one he’s in to save him!

Yoshi got trapped in a Tox Box, and you will have to save him! There are three Tox Boxes on the screen, one of them containing Yoshi. The Tox Boxes will move around, switching places with each other (similar to shell games). In later levels, there are two Yoshis, and you will have to choose the right one. You get two chances to rescue Yoshi.

Which Wiggler?

edit

Touch the Wiggler on the Touch Screen that matches the top screen. Choose carefully, though; he has a terrible temper.

There are a few Wigglers that appear on the Touch Screen, one of them matching the one on the top screen. If you choose the right one, five seconds will be added to the timer. If you choose the wrong one, ten seconds will be taken off of your score. In later levels, there will be more Wigglers, making it harder to find the right one.

Mix-a-Mug

edit

Line up the slots on the Touch Screen to form a face. Win more coins by matching the center face in the slots to the one on the top screen.

You will need to line up the slots to form a picture (Mario, Luigi, Wario, Yoshi, or Princess Peach) that matches the one on the top screen, similar to the slots in Super Mario Bros. 3. If you line up the slots correctly, you win three coins. If you line them up incorrectly, you will lose three coins. If you line up the center face, you can get six coins.

Puzzle Panic

edit

This mini-game takes the Puzzle Panel to a whole new level. Put on your thinking cap. You’re going to need it.

This minigame is a harder version of Puzzle Panel, having more panels to flip over. As before, harder levels require more turns to solve, and you get three chances to solve them.

Minigames/Mario

Mario's minigames are action-packed. They include line drawing, Mario falling, and Koopa shells!

Mario's Slides

edit

Guide Mario down the slides to the Star. Draw lines on the Touch Screen to create new routes for him. Collect 5 Stars to move up a stage.

Use the Stylus and the Touch Screen to make a new route. Also, there are two yellow arrows that will make Mario move faster if you touch one. Each time you get the Star, you continue on the same Level, with the lines you've drawn still there! When you've collected 5 Stars, you move on to the next Level. The old routes is removed, and it gets harder! After 100 Stars You Get Faster Mario!

Bounce and Pounce

edit

Mario's in free fall, but he can bounce back if you touch him. Stomp the Fly Guys, but make sure he doesn't fall off the Touch Screen.

In this minigame, there are three Marios in free fall and Fly Guys flying around in the screens. The goal is to stomp on all the Fly Guys, touch Mario on his left, right or center to make him bounce in that direction. You can only let Mario fall off the Touch Screen three times!

Sort or 'Splode

edit

Guide Bob-ombs to the black carpet and Bob-omb Buddies to the red carpet. If you bring in a wrong colored Bob-omb, it will blow up!

Of course, it starts out simple and easy. Use the Touch Screen to move the Bob-ombs to the right colored carpet. Black Bob-ombs go on the black carpet, and Bob-omb Buddies go on the red carpet. At first, it there's only one gate open. Soon, they other gate is open, and the Bob-omb start coming in sets to two, then three! There are short pauses for every 40 Bob-ombs or Bob-omb Buddies. Don't ever put a Bob-omb on the wrong carpet, or all of the Bob-Ombs on that carpet will explode also!

Trampoline Time

edit

Draw a line on the Touch Screen to turn it into a trampoline. You can draw up to 3 lines at a time. Help Mario bounce to safety!

Use the Stylus and Touch Screen to make a Trampoline. In this minigame, you have to get Mario to the lit up door. There's a big trampoline at the bottom, and it can only be bounced on 3 times. When it's gone, you'll have to be careful not to let Mario fall! Mario can only fall off the screen three times. At some point, you will hear rumbling sounds and the walls will move up a little.

Shuffle Shell

edit

Use the paddle to push the Koopa shells to the target. The closer the shells land to the center of the target, the more points you will earn.

In this game, you have to try and get the 5 Koopa shells on the target with the paddle. The closer a Koopa shell is to the center, the more points you'll get! But be careful, if you hit a Koopa shell too hard, you might hit another shell off the target!

  • Outside of the target: 0 Points
  • Blue: 100 Points
  • White: 300 Points
  • Red: 500 Points
  • White Center: 1000 Points
  • Red Center: 2000 Points

Bounce and Trounce

edit

Mario surrounded by Fly Guys to trounce. Touch him on his left, right, or center to make him bounce in that direction.

This minigame is similar to Bounce and Pounce. But instead of Levels, it will go on and on! The High Score is the highest amount of Fly Guys stomped on. The Fly Guys will come in different sizes, and some will fly around. They can be in the top screen also! You can only let Mario fall off the Touch Screen three times!

Connect the Characters

edit

Draw lines to match the characters' heads to their bodies. Press "GO!" when you're finished to see how you fared!

There are toys that have their heads removed! To put them together, use the Touch Screen and Stylus to create a new route for the heads. After getting a Star, the lines you made will still be there! Each time you get 5 Stars, you go on to the next Level, and the routes you made is removed. At first, there's Mario and Yoshi. At Level 2, Luigi joins in, making it a little more difficult. Wario comes in at Level 3, and soon there are horizontal lines already drawn: then you really have to think!

Shell Smash

edit

Hit Koopa shells together to score points. Hit many in a row for more points. Score even higher points by smashing green shells together.

This minigame is similar to Shuffle Shell, but you have to smash shells together to get points. If you smash a green Koopa shell with another green shell, you'll get more points! You'll only have 5 green Koopa shells.

Trampoline Terror

edit

Only players with superb stylus skills will be able to make Mario bounce through the rings!

This minigame is like Trampoline Time, but instead of getting to a certain area, you have to get Mario through the rings! Use the Touch Screen and Stylus to draw a line that'll become a trampoline! Big trampolines don't make Mario bounce as high, and a trampoline can only bounce Mario once. (Except for the large one at the bottom, that can only be bounced on 3 times. After that, It's gone.)

Minigames/Luigi

Luigi's games involve gambling. Your high score is the highest number of coins you have.

Memory Match

edit

Pick two matching cards to make them disappear. Clear all the cards to win.

In this minigame, Luigi will throw in eight cards. You get three chances to win. If you pick two cards that match, they will disappear. If you choose the wrong cards, you lose a coin. If you lose all three, you fail. If you match all the cards, you will get a Star. If you get five Stars, more cards will appear, up to twelve cards.

Strategy

edit

There is a very easy strategy to beat this minigame.

Overview
  • C = cloud
  • S = star
  • M = mushroom
  • F = flower
Steps

First, when Luigi deals the cards tap two cards diagonally next to each other. Let's say that they are Cloud and Star. You will lose a coin but continue to play. Keep those cards in your head.

  • C-?-?-? Row 1
  • ?-S-?-? Row 2

Second, tap the two cards diagonally in between the first two like this, say they were mushroom, flower:

  • C-M-?-? Row 1
  • F-S-?-? Row 2

Keep those cards in your head, and repeat them out loud to yourself or in your head, saying "Cloud, star, mushroom, flower." Then keep repeating when you are in doubt.

Third, tap somewhere in the area that you havent searched yet, say it was a Flower.

  • C-M-F-? Row 1
  • F-S-?-? Row 2

Match the two up by repeating the order in your head, and repeat that step. Sometimes you can get the same card twice in one of the diagnal lines.

  • C-?-?-? Row 1
  • ?-C-?-? Row 2

Just continue the above routine of checking the other cards. Sometimes you can get unlucky and have this combination.

  • C-M-?-? Row 1
  • C-M-?-? Row 2

If you get this then you will be left with one coin when you check the other square and you would be pretty unlucky if you then get the same thing again.

  • C-M-F-S Row 1
  • C-M-F-S Row 2

And this is possibly the only way to lose this method, so on average you would lose 1/6 games with this strategy.

Pair-a-Gone

edit

Touch 2 identical cards that are connected vertically, horizontally, or diagonally to make them disappear. Clear them all to win!

Luigi will throw in twenty cards, and you have to choose matching pairs connected horizontally, diagonally, or vertically. To win this minigame, clear all of the matching pairs. If the last few don't connect, you lose!

Picture Poker

edit

Get a better hand than Luigi to win! If you're confident your hand is best, increase the number of coins you bet!

This is the easiest minigame to play. You can't lose! The game uses a 30-card deck. There are six ranks of cards, with five cards per rank:

  • Star (highest)
  • Mario
  • Luigi
  • Flower
  • Mushroom
  • Cloud (lowest)

You are dealt five cards, and Luigi is dealt five cards. You choose which five cards to discard (clicking on a card indicates you wish to discard it, not keep it). Then optionally bet more coins, then discard (or hold all your cards). Luigi will also discard. If your hand beats Luigi's, you are paid according to the following table:

Hand Multiplier
1 pair 2
2 pairs 3
3 of a kind 4
full house 6
4 of a kind 8
5 of a kind 16
5 Stars 20
5 Red Stars 25

Note that the table does not include your original wager. For example, if you bet five coins and win with two pair, your net profit is ten coins, not fifteen.

Probably the best strategy to use for discarding is the obvious one: keep all cards that fit into one of the above hands and throw away all other cards. Or to put it another way, throw away any card that appears only once in your hand. This is the same strategy Luigi uses, therefore it gives you a 50% chance to win (not counting the 0.6% chance of a draw). It automatically gives you an advantage of over 100%, meaning on average you will win a little over one coin per coin wagered. Wow! Casinos can only dream of getting an advantage this huge. :)

If you have at least a pair before the draw, always bet the maximum five coins. Otherwise, stay at the minimum bet. This will increase your edge even further than just betting five coins every time, but not by much, since you rarely get dealt junk hands.

Mushroom Roulette

edit

Guess where the ball will land on the roulette wheel. Guess correctly to win coins!

At the start of this minigame, Luigi will throw the ball on the roulette wheel, and you have to guess where it will land.

  • Red Star
  • Red Mario
  • Red Luigi
  • Red Fire Flower
  • Red Mushroom
  • Red Cloud
  • Black Star
  • Black Mario
  • Black Luigi
  • Black Fire Flower
  • Black Mushroom
  • Black Cloud

Put the coins on the pictures. You can also guess which color it will land on (red or black). You can also put coins in between the pictures to get a higher chance of winning, however, this won't get you as many coins. You can even put multiple coins on the same picture to get several coins, however, this won't give you a very high chance of winning. If you guess correctly, you win coins!

Mario Slot

edit

Touch the spinning slots to stop them. Get 3 items in a row to earn coins! The Superstar is wild.

Have you seen some slot machines in the background when you were playing some other Luigi minigames? Well, now you are gambling using the slot machine! The slot machine will take one of your coins. You can increase the number of coins you bet. Line up three of the same picture to win. The Superstar acts as a wild card. This table will show you how much coins the items are worth.

Picture Number of coins
3 Red Superstars 25 times of a player's bet
3 Superstars 20 times of a player's bet
3 Stars 15 times of a player's bet
3 Fire Flowers 10 times of a player's bet
3 Mushrooms 10 times of a player's bet
3 Cape Feathers 5 times of a player's bet
3 Yoshi Eggs 5 times of a player's bet
2 Superstars 4 times of a player's bet
1 Superstar 2 times of a player's bet

Lucky Stars

edit

From a pair of cards, pick the one with more Stars to win coins. Beat Luigi at his own game!

Luigi will throw in two cards. You will need to pick the one that has more Stars on it. If you pick that one, you win coins. If you pick the one with less Stars, you lose. You can increase the number of coins you bet.

Pair-a-Gone And On

edit

This game of Pair-a-Gone goes on forever! Test your skill and see how many cards you can clear. Go for the record!

This minigame is another version of Pair-a-Gone, except it goes on forever! Unlike most Luigi minigames, you don't have to exit this one to save the game. This is also point-based rather than coin-based. Luigi will keep throwing in more and more cards until there are no more matching cards that are next to each other.

Memory Master

edit

If Memory Match was a piece of cake for you, try out this harder version. You now have more cards to play with.

This minigame is the harder version of Memory Match. You will now have to match sixteen cards! At the start, four of the cards will flip over, allowing you to see what is on the other side. Luckily you have more chances to do this (five chances). If you choose the wrong cards, you lose a coin. If you lose all five, you fail. If you match all the cards, you will get a Star. If you get five Stars, more cards will appear, up to twenty cards.

Super Mario Slot

edit

Touch the spinning slots to stop them. Get 3 items in a row to earn coins! The Superstar is wild. Are you feeling super lucky?

This minigame is exactly the same as Mario Slot. The only difference is that you now have a higher chance of winning (there are more Superstars).

Minigames/Wario

Wario's minigames require a lot of skill. It involves destroying Bob-ombs, rolling a snowball down a course, and much more.

Bob-omb Squad

edit

The parachuting Bob-ombs are destroying your flowers! Use your slingshot to knock them out of the air. Hit Lakitu to blow them all up.

Oh, no!!! The Bob-ombs are parachuting from the sky and trying to destroy your flowers! You will need to use your slingshot to knock them out of the sky. If you hit a Lakitu, all of the parachuting Bob-ombs will explode. This minigame gets harder as you progress through it, as the Bob-ombs start parachuting faster. Blow 'em up before all of your flowers are dead.

Snowball Slalom

edit

Rub the Touch Screen to roll the snowman's head to the goal before time runs out! Rocks will slow you down, as will touching his head!

In this minigame, you need to roll the snowman's head to the finish line. Try to avoid rocks on the road as they will slow you down. Can you get to the finish line before time runs out?

Bingo Ball

edit

Launch a ball into a numbered slot on the Touch Screen. That number will light up the top screen. Get 3 numbers in a row to score!

Use a plunger to launch the ball (similar to pinball). If a ball hits a Star, the wheel will change direction. You will need to get the ball into a numbered slot on the Touch Screen. Get more points by getting three numbers in a row. If you get the ball into all of the numbered slots, you win! You can get even more points if there are some balls left over.

Coincentration

edit

Pay attention to where the falling coins land. Touch the blocks to retrieve the coins. But, if you choose the wrong block, your game will end.

Yay!!! Coins are raining from the sky!!! Anyway, you will see coins falling coins, and you have to pay close attention to which bricks they're going to land in. The bricks can contain one, two, or three coins. But some of them contain no coins at all. If you choose any of those bricks, the minigame will end.

Psyche Out!

edit

Are you psychic? Can you guess what's on the card's other side? Maybe if you stare at it long enough, a vision will come to you.

There are two cards on the Touch Screen, one of them matching the one on the top screen. You will need to pick the right one. You can kind of see what picture is on the other side. In later levels, more cards will appear, making them harder.

Slots Shot

edit

The bars swing open when a ball goes in a Piranha Plant. Sink the ball into the pipe to trigger the slots Switch. Get 3 items in a row for a bonus!

As with Bingo Ball, the balls are launched in pinball-style. There are Mushrooms and 1-Up Mushrooms that give you 300 points if you hit them. You also get the balls into holes to score points. There are two Piranha Plants in this minigame as well. If a ball goes into one, the bars blocking the pipe will open. If a ball goes into both Piranha Plants, the bar above the pipe will disappear. There is an ! Switch at the bottom of the pipe. This switch activates the slots machine. If you get three items in a row (Fire Flowers, Stars, or 7s) you will win more points.

Lakitu Launch

edit

Shoots as many balls as you can into the tubs within the allotted time.

Use the slingshot to get the Spinys into the giant shells that the Lakitus are carrying. At the end of this minigame, the Spinys are counted and you will get a point for each Spiny.

Intense Coincentration

edit

There aren't as many falling coins this time around, but that won't stop Wario. Watch the coins carefully!

This minigame is similar to Coincentration, except there are less coins. Pay attention to which bricks the coins will land in. As before, if you choose the wrong brick, the minigame will end.

Giant Snowball Slalom

edit

Roll the snowball over a longer course! As before, avoid rocks because they'll slow the player down.

As with Snowball Slalom, you need to roll a snowball over a course, but the track is longer. Avoid rocks and penguins, since they'll slow you down. You also need more time to get to the finish line.
