  • Historical narrative surrounding the first heart implant in Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa in 1967 and the use of radiation in it to suppress risk of rejection. Radiation delivered using a custom 1 Curie portable cobalt unit in the operating theater using 100 rads day #2, 85 rads days #3, and then in the radiation department using 200 rads day #4, #5, and #8.
