Background

edit

An earlier unofficial 2015 petition for a new Dreamcast caught media attention.[1] Internal conflict among that project lead to it being shuttered in 2016.[2]

The console is sometimes associated with this petition as the creators of that petition endorsed the Spartan, though they were not directly involved in development.[3]

Development

edit

A twitter account for the platform was created in September of 2017,[4] first posting a teaser for the console on October 1st, 2017.[5] The console was then covered by the channel SpawnWave shortly afterwards on October 16th, 2017.[6]

A new controller design was announced on April 29th, 2018.[7]

A new prototype controller unit was shown in a September 19th, 2020 update.[8]

Software

edit

The system runs an operating system known as Spartan OS.[9] This operating system is based on Linux, and is meant to be open with the exception of a proprietary game software.[3]

Hardware

edit

The system had two standard USB ports, two super speed USB ports, a USB type C port, S/PDIF, Headphone jack, microphone jack, HDMI port, Displayport, and DC power in.[10]

Games

edit

The system supported "software/hardware emulation" for earlier Sega home consoles, including the Sega Master System, Mega Drive/Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast, as well as the Sega Game Gear portable console.[3] The developers specifically noted that the open source projects RetroArch and Libretro were not used.[3]

Exclusives
