History

Development

edit

By January 2012 rumors of a new Neo Geo handheld began surfacing on news sites.[1]

The Neo Geo X was initially supposed to launch in Q2 2012.[2]

The Neo Geo X Gold handheld and dock launched in December 2012 for $199.99 alongside the base handheld only Neo Geo X, which sold for $129.99.[3][4][5]

By late 2013 SNK and Neo Geo X maker Tommo entered a legal dispute, with SNK trying to end production immediately, and Tommo claiming the right to produce the console till 2016.[6][7]

Technology

edit

There is some speculation that the Neo Geo X was based on a modified Dingoo A320 handheld.[6][8] However the SOC in the Neo Geo X is significantly newer then the one used in the A320,[9] and the system has more RAM.

Compute

edit

The Neo Geo X is powered by an Ingenic Semiconductor Jz4770 system on a chip with an Xburst CPU clocked at one gigahertz and a GPU.[10][9]

The Neo Geo X has 128 megabytes of DDR2 RAM clocked at 250 megahertz,[5] [11] though some Eurogamer claims it has 256 megabytes of RAM.[12]

Hardware

edit

The Neo Geo X has two gigabytes of built in storage which is either just an internal microSD card glued to the system or a properly mounted flash chip on later revisions, and can accept official games through a SD card slot.[12][13][14][15]

The Neo Geo X has a 4.3 inch LCD with a resolution of 480 by 272 pixels, and features composite AV output and HDMI output.[12]

The control stick uses microswitches.[10]

The Neo Geo X is powered by a 3.7 volt lithium ion battery with a capacity of 2200mAh.[11][15]

Software

edit

The Neo Geo X operating system runs the Linux 2.6.31.3 kernel.[10][11]

The Neo Geo X runs Neo Geo games through the Final Burn Alpha emulator.[12] At launch the only system check done was matching the file names of ROMs on the internal storage with what it expected, leading to easy and quick modifications within a month after the system launched.[13][11]

Games

edit

The Neo Geo X saw the official release of 36 Neo Geo games.[16]

20 Neo Geo games were built into the Neo Geo X, with an additional 16 available.[17]

A special Ninja Master's game card was released.[18]
