Greek Mythology/Theoretical Issues

The feel of the stories about the Olympian gods is strangely like the feel of the stories about the gods of Ugarit. The stories from Ugarit are, roughly, seven hundred years earlier and the pantheon there is completely different. One striking fact is that in both cases the gods lived on the top of a high mountain to the north.

It has been suggested that the catalog of ships in the Iliad is not myth, in the sense of being non-historical, but a historical survival from earlier days, perhaps as many as five centuries before. There is no implication that the list originally has anything to do with Troy.
