This may be described as a decade of wild decadence and rebellion in which public consciousness first burst out of the colonial mindset underpinning the economic rebuilding after the great depression. New found wealth made new forms of subsistence possible and this encouraged the formation experimental communities espousing philosophies aligned with deep ecology, humanism and communalism. Ironically this was occurring at the same time Australia's traditional markets were collapsing.
