The Vegemite sandwich is a simple dish, which is known to frequent the lunchboxes of school children and the plates of casual breakfasters alike. The lunchbox variety often involves two slices of bread, whereas the breakfast variety usually only involves one, and is often toasted. Margarine may be used as a replacement for the butter, however in modern times it is becoming common for margarine/butter to be considered an optional ingredient.

  1. Spread butter thickly and unevenly on bread. (optional)
  2. Spread Vegemite a little less thickly, and unevenly on bread.
  3. A slice of cheese can be added at this point. (optional)

  • A variation is to add avocado for an avocado and Vegemite sandwich.
  • Yet another variation is to spread Vegemite and then place sliced onions and a slice of cheese on toast and then place under a grill or toaster to melt the cheese.
  • Some consumers assert that white sliced bread will give a superior result.
  • Staples of school lunches, particularly from the Tuck Shop or school canteen, are Vegemite and Lettuce and Vegemite and Cheese Sandwiches. In each case, it's simply a standard Vegemite Sandwich with an additional ingredient added.
  • Try to add ham and cheese as another idea, makes a very nice sandwich.
  • Vegemite on toast is a favourite breakfast food.
