World of Dinosaurs/Akainacephalus
Basics
editAkainacephalus means "Spike Head". It lived during the Cretaceous, and was a relative of Euoplocephalus.
Anatomy
editIt walked on four legs. It was covered in armor. It had spikes and horns covering its skull. And it had a large club tail.
Phylogeny
editAkainacephalus is an ankylosaurid. All ankylosaurids are dinosaurs. All dinosaurs are ammonites and all dinosaurs are tetrapods.
Biomechanics
editAkainacephalus had a large club tail made of bone that it could have used to discourage predators, like Utahraptor, who also lived in Utah at the same time. It also had bony plates (osteoderms) covering it in protective armor.
Fossil Record
editIt was found in Utah, in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Park.
Ecology
editFlowering plants had evolved by this point.
Biogeography
editAt this time the continent was a large island continent.
