These farmers were surrounded by people who still lived as hunter/gatherers, and there was constant warfare between the two groups. Farmers organized into city states, and then into empires. They called the hunter/gatherers "barbarians". When the city states and empires were not fighting off invasions by barbarians, city would fight city, empire would fight empire.
