Nouns

The first part of speech is a noun.

A noun is a word that is a person, an animal, a place or a thing.

"Mailman", "library", "elephant" and "book" are all nouns. "Mailman" is a person, "elephant" is an animal, "library" is a place and "book" is a thing. "Eat", "happy" and "quickly" are not nouns. They are not people, animals, places or things. They are other parts of speech. "Eat" is a verb, "happy" is an adjective and "quickly" is an adverb. You may not know what verbs, adjectives and adverbs are yet, but that's OK.

Exercise

Tell if the words in bold are nouns.

2. I don't care.
3. It seems the monkey fell out of the tree.
4. Many people think that grammar is fun.
5. If you eat eyeballs, you will get sick.
6. I went to Washington on the weekend.
