Wikijunior:Extinct Birds/Carolina Parakeet
The Carolina parakeet, Conuropsis carolinensis, is a now extinct green parrot.
Distribution
editThey were found in the North-East of the USA.
Description
editThey were mainly green with a bright orange head, pale beak with an orange face. Young birds were purely green, though were paler on their chest.
Behaviour
editThey lived in very large flocks, often with 200 or 300 members. They had 2 to 5 round, white eggs at a time.
Diet
editThey ate seeds from plants such as the pine, oak and beech and fruits, like grapes, apples and figs.
Extinction
editHumans certainly helped make the Carolina Parakeet extinct. They did this through deforestation, hunting and the pet trade.
