Image Formats Guiding Questions

  1. How do you inspect file properties?
  2. List and describe some file properties.
  3. List several common graphic file formats.

  6. Are bigger files better? Explain your answer using the appropriate terminology.

Gif, jpg, tiff, png, what are they and what does it mean to me? This exercise will guide you through the basics of file compression and provide you with the ability to change file types.

Create a folder on your desktop Download 5 graphic images from the Internet. View the details of the folder's content. (From the Menu Bar - View - Details) Note you may sort ascending or descending by clicking on each column heading in this view!! Open one of your images using Paint (right mouse click, Open with) and change the file type of one of your images to a bitmap (.bmp) file extension. File - Save As - Save as Type Create and publish a spreadsheet in Google Documents that contains the following column headings:(recall you can copy and paste many of these) File name File Size File format or type Create blog post and publish that includes a short narrative that summarizes your learning by answering the guiding questions and include hyperlink to your published spreadsheet. From your observations what file format or graphic type is the most common on the Internet? What is the minimum, maximum, and average file size from your sample? Include a paragraph that includes your thoughts what impact did the changing the file type have on your image? Did the icon change? Did the program that opens the image change? Did the file size change? Did the image quality change?
