Truth in the promotion of Tobacco edit

Tobacco was often smoked for recreation by wealthy men, but soon health concerns began to arise. To combat this many cigarette brands used fake physicians in their advertisements recommending their brand over others. In particular, the brand Lucky Strike used the tag line '20,679 physicians say ‘Luckies are less irritating' '[1]. Interestingly, since the nicotine in cigarettes made them addictive some doctors were actually regular smokers and thus claimed that health issues were not directly related to cigarettes and were instead regarded as a case by case problem. It was in the mid 1950s that studies were being published showing the effect of smoking on the development of lung cancer.
