Background

Parkinson's Disease

edit

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder, which has no definitive cause, however a lack of dopamine production is known to be a contributing factor [1].Low levels of dopamine results in bradykinesia, or the slowness of movement, which is one of the most recognisable symptoms of Parkinson's disease [1] [2]. Parkinson's disease can also affect a person's sleep and memory, and cause pain and potentially depression [1]. The disease does not cause death, and can be lived with for a long time, however, a person's quality of life is degraded [1].

Prevalence

edit

In Australia currently, approximately 80,000 have Parkinson's disease, with the average age of diagnosis around 65 [1].

Effect of high intensity resistance training

edit

The is currently no cure for Parkinson's, however there are treatments to help people deal with symptoms [1].
