Tetum/Introduction

Introduction edit

Tetum is one of the two official languages of East Timor (Timor-Leste), the other one being Portuguese. It is worth noting that a significant number of people also speak Indonesian, English, Cantonese, or one the other 15 indigenous languages.

For several centuries, East Timor was a Portuguese colony, because of that fact Tetum gained many similarities to that language. Eventually, East Timor was annexed by Indonesia. After a protracted fight for independence, the people was allowed to chose via a referendum. Independence was finally gained and East Timor became the first democracy of the new millennium.
