Program Standard 16: Using Technology to Support Student Learning

Each participating teacher builds upon the knowledge, skills, and abilities acquired during preliminary preparation for the delivery of comprehensive, specialized use of appropriate computer-based technology to facilitate the teaching and learning processes. Each participating teacher is a fluent, critical user of technology, able to provide a relevant education and to prepare his/her students to be life-long learners in an information-based, interactive society. Each participating teacher makes appropriate and efficient use of software applications and related media to access and evaluate information, analyze and solve problems, and communicate ideas in order to maximize the instructional process. This use of technology supports teaching and learning regardless of individual learning style, socioeconomic background, culture, ethnicity, or geographic location. Each participating teacher integrates these technology-related tools into the educational experience of students, including those with special needs.

Standard 16a: Communicate using electronic media
Standard 16b: Collaborate using electronic and other tools
Standard 16c: Curriculum-aligned electronic learning resources
Standard 16d: Lessons to develop lifelong learning skills
Standard 16e: Technology to teach curriculum and learning skills
Standard 16f: Computers for analysis, assessment and feedback

These are K-12 credentialing requirements. The Technology Enhanced Instruction course was initially designed for community college faculty based on the best practices for higher education. Reviewing the Standard 16 requirements against the objectives and curriculum for Technology Enhanced Instruction, it became clear that the overall practices and concepts are closely aligned and each can benefit from the important elements of the other.

Implementation and demonstration of these standards is required for K-12 teaching credentialing. Although there is no longer an equivalent requirement for higher education (13-14) instruction, faculty can extend their instructional practices knowledge and professional development through reference to these standards. To that end, the following is a list of the standards and some examples of how participants might apply and demonstrate their use.

a. Communications through a variety of media - email, discussion forums, chat
b. Communications with other professionals using a variety of methods - forums, collaboration
c. Uses technology resources: classroom, library - web references, graphics, images, audio, video
d. Students develop information literacy and problem solving - assignments, discussion forums
e. Technology in lessons - lesson plan, profile of pratice, framework, unit design
f. Application of data to inform students learning to their parents - electronic grading, grading reports
g. Reflects and monitors the results of using technology in instruction / student assessment - observation, data analysis, reflection
