References: PMID 18042939

  • Male breast cancer accounts for <1% of all breast cancer cases in the US.
  • BRCA2:
    • Overall, 14% risk of being BRCA2+ (unselected patients with male breast cancer)
    • Risk of BRCA2+ in 77% in men with breast cancer in families with hereditary breast cancer
    • Risk for development of breast cancer in BRCA2+ man: 6.3% by age 70 [1]; 2.8% by age 70 and 6.9% by 80[2]; relative risk of 102[3]
  • BRCA1:
    • Association is less clear than with BRCA2

Epidemiology

edit
  • MSKCC, 1999 (1973-94) PMID 10463981 -- "Localized male breast carcinoma and family history. An analysis of 142 patients." (Hill A, Cancer. 1999 Sep 1;86(5):821-5.)
    • 142 pts treated at MSKCC or Ochsner Clinic.
    • 5-year OS 86%, 10-yr 64%.
    • 15% of pts had a 1st degree relative with breast cancer.
    • Conclusion: Family history did not affect the age at diagnosis, duration of symptoms, the stage, or survival.

BRCA mutations

edit
  • NCI, 2007 PMID 18042939 -- "Breast cancer risk among male BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers." (Tai YC, J Natl Cancer Inst. 2007 Dec 5;99(23):1811-4.)
    • Retrospective. 97 men with breast cancer identified in multicenter database of families with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations.
    • Male BRCA1 carriers: cumulative risk of breast cancer by age 70 of 1.2%
    • BRCA2: cumulative risk by age 70 of 6.8%

Retrospective series
