Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), also called electroshock therapy. It used electric shock to induce spasms, is a way to treat psychotic illnesses. Hence in psychiatry is a physical method to treat severe depression, bi-polar disorder and schizophrenia, when medications and psychotherapy are useless. It originated in the 1930's, nowadays under the use of anesthetics and muscle relaxants are relatively safe. It has became a safe method of treatment for pregnant women with psychiatric illnesses (because antipsychotic medications might cause harm to the fetuses and teratism, while ECT only affects the brain, so is relatively safe.) In the early years there is no anesthetics, so can easily has spasms-induced complications, such as bone and teeth fractures.
