Gyakuten Kenji 2/Episode 5: The Grand Turnabout/Beginning, Part 2
At the courthouse, the trial is just getting underway. Ray is in charge of the defence, and Franziska has taken over the prosecution. The defendant, Patricia Roland, is called to the stand. She seems oddly confident, however. Franziska prepares to present her decisive evidence... but it's nowhere to be found. It seems Debeste misplaced the murder weapon, the most vital piece of evidence. Ray tries to get the trial postponed, but Courtney overrules him. Without evidence, Roland cannot be found guilty, and so Courtney prepares to hand down her verdict. Both Franziska and Ray request a recess, and eventually, Courtney agrees.
District Court - 3rd Floor Lobby / 地方裁判所・ロビー
editOutside in the lobby, Edgeworth and Kay have found out about the missing evidence. They are greeted by Regina Berry and Simon Keyes, who came to watch the trial. Franziska and Ray emerge from the courtroom. Franziska is none too pleased about the missing evidence. Talk to her:
- The trial (裁判について Saiban ni tsuite): Edgeworth decides to stay classy and avoid getting into an argument with Franziska.
- Knightley’s murder (内藤殺害事件 Naitō satsugai jiken): She's still annoyed at Debeste for losing the evidence.
For a bit of extra fun dialogue present the Crime Scene Notes.
Talk to Ray:
- The trial (裁判について Saiban ni tsuite): The evidence is missing. Guess who Ray wants to look for it?
- Edgeworth Law Offices (御剣について Mitsurugi ni tsuite): Ray tries again to convince Edgeworth to join him at the defence's bench.
Edgeworth eventually gives in, and agrees to help look for the evidence. Ray and Franziska agree to try and stall the trial, and Simon and Regina decide to help search for the evidence. Kay wants to know who you should ask about the evidence first. Present Sebastian Debeste's profile (一柳 弓彦). Simon and Regina go off to look for him, while Ray and Franziska leave to discuss the trial. Before Edgeworth can leave, though, Courtney enters the lobby. She says that in the courtroom, all that matters is evidence, and without it, she must declare Roland innocent. Edgeworth asks her about her meeting with President Huang on the roof of the Grand Tower. She is shocked to learn that Huang is dead, and that she is a suspect, but refuses to tell Edgeworth about her meeting with Huang. Courtney is clearly trying to hide something, so Edgeworth is forced to use "that" to draw the truth from her.
Logic Chess: Justine Courtney / ロジックチェス ~水鏡 秤~
editCourtney is a judge, and refuses to show any emotion. When she's doing so, you'll want to wait and see how she reacts to your questions. First, ask What did you and the president talk about? (大統領と何を話していたのだ? Daitōryō to nani o hanashite ita no da?) She refuses to answer you.
Wait and see. (まだ様子を見る Mada yōsu o miru) Edgeworth asks if meeting the president was one of her duties as a judge. She hesitates in responding, and says she would never act outside her duties.
Choose Didn’t you help me out this morning? (今朝は助けてくれたではないか! Kesa wa tasukete kureta dewa nai ka!) While you see it as an act of kindness, she sees it as immature. She seems distraught by the news of Huang's death, but is particularly surprised to hear of the apparent cause of death - being crushed by the Moozilla head.
Knight defeated
She won't talk to you about Huang, so maybe you should ask about someone else - perhaps the missing prosecutor? Ask Where is Prosecutor Debeste? (一柳検事はどこにいるのだ? Ichiyanagi-kenji wa doko ni iru no da?) She says that in the absence of evidence, the defendant must be found innocent.
Wait and see. (まだ様子を見る Mada yōsu o miru) Edgeworth asks if she is worried about Debeste. She says she is of course worried about him - "as well".
Choose Are you worried about anyone else? (他にダレか心配な人が? Hoka ni dare ka shinpai na hito ga?) She again insists that as a judge, she cannot allow her own feelings to cloud her judgement.
Choose As a judge, you’re only human! (裁判官の前に、1人の人間だろう! Saibankan no mae ni, hitori no ningen darō!) She admits that, in her current state, she cannot be impartial.
Bishop defeated
She is especially distraught. To find the truth, you need to find out exactly who she is looking for. You have three options:
- Who are you searching for? (ダレを捜しているのだ? Dare o sagashite iru no da?)
- Are you searching for Prosecutor Debeste? (一柳検事を捜しているのか? Ichiyanagi-kenji o sagashite iru no ka?)
- Are you searching for Moozilla? (大怪獣ボルモスを探しているのか? Daikaijū Borumosu o sagashite iru no ka?)
First, select Are you searching for Prosecutor Debeste? She says that Debeste must overcome his father's words on his own.
Wait and see. (まだ様子を見る Mada yōsu o miru) She says that Debeste could return on his own, so is the person she's looking for unable to return of their own will? She wonders what would happen to "that child" if she were to tell the truth.
Choose Who is "that child" you speak of? (”あの子”とはダレだ? "Ano ko" to wa dare da?) She tells you to ignore it, but her expression gives lie to her true feelings. Remember this for later.
Choose Are you searching for Moozilla? (大怪獣ボルモスを探しているのか?) Edgeworth mentions how surprised she was to learn of how the president died. She says she was simply shocked to learn of where Huang died.
Choose What’s wrong with where he died? (死んだ場所に何か問題が? Shin da basho ni nani ka mondai ga?) She thinks it would be better if the film's crew didn't learn of how Huang died.
Choose A staff member found the body. (第一発見者はスタッフだが Dai ichi-hakken-sha wa sutaffu da ga) She reacts strongly to this news. This could be useful later.
Choose Who are you searching for? (ダレを捜しているのだ? Dare o sagashite iru no da?) She refuses to answer. Time for those clues.
Choose Could it be that missing child? (”あの子”が行方不明なのだろう? "Ano ko" ga yukue fumei na no darō?) She says the child has nothing to do with the incident. You'll need to break out another clue.
Choose Is he involved in the Moozilla movie? (ボルモス映画の関係者なのでは? Borumosu eiga no kankei-sha na no dewa?) She finally tells you that she is looking for John Marsh, the star of the Moozilla film. Why she's looking for him, though, she won't say.
Rook defeated
Now that you know who she's looking for, the next step is to find out why. You have three choices:
- Are you acquainted with him? (彼と知り合いなのか? Kare to shiriai na no ka?
- Where is he right now? (彼はいま、どこにいるのだ? Kare wa ima, doko ni iru no da?)
- Are you a fan of his? (彼のファンなのだろうか? Kare no fan na no darō ka?)
First, select Are you a fan of his? She says yes, straight away. Is that true?
Wait and see. (まだ様子を見る Mada yōsu o miru) She says she knew that John would be at the film lot, because he told her they would be filming all day long.
Choose Did you hear that from him? (本人から聞いたのか? Hon'nin kara kiita no ka?) It looks like she's been talking to John himself. This sounds like another clue.
Choose Are you acquainted with him? (彼と知り合いなのか?) She claims to know "everything" about John.
Wait and see. (まだ様子を見る Mada yōsu o miru) She says that her connection to John is one-sided. Time for that clue.
Choose You must have spoken with John! (シモンくんと話したはずだ! Shimon-kun to hanashita hazu da!) It seems that Courtney and John are indeed acquainted. Remember this for later.
Choose Where is he right now? (彼はいま、どこにいるのだ?) She says she wouldn't know where he is, as they have no connection. Is that really the case?
Choose You two must be acquainted! (2人は知り合いのはずだ! Futari wa shiriai no hazu da!) Edgeworth offers to help her look for John, but she says that someone won't allow it.
Choose A kidnapper? (連れ去った者だろうか? Tsuresatta mono darō ka?) Courtney finally tells you the truth - someone has kidnapped John. As for her relation to John - she is actually... his mother?
Queen defeated
Checkmate / チェックメイト
Courtney explains that, just before the trial began, she received a call from the kidnapper. Their only demand was a "not guilty" verdict for Patricia Roland. So this is why Courtney was about to declare Roland innocent... She is deeply upset by this, and deems herself unfit to be a judge, since her verdict was not impartial. Kay and Edgeworth reassure her that it is fine for her to be worried about her son. The recess is over, and Courtney prepares to return to the trial. Kay offers to find John for her, so that she can deliver the correct verdict in the trial. Courtney agrees, and gives you her mobile phone, in case the kidnapper calls again. She says that she will try to drag out the trial, but the most she can give you is two hours. Edgeworth suggests that they begin from the tower's plaza.
Investigation: Outside Grand Tower - Tower Plaza / 捜査 ~ビッグタワー前広場~
editFirst, examine the taxi to talk to its driver. He's had one job today - two men, dressed in black. You receive the Two men logic (2人組の男 Futari kumi no otoko). Talk to the police officer. He says that the only cars that have passed by today are the taxi and the nearby blue truck. The Cars that came through (出入りした車 Deirishita kuruma) are added to your Logic. Examine the blue truck in question. It's cold, so it's probably been here for some time. The driver is absent, so you can't ask them any questions. The Blue Truck (青いトラック aoi torakku) is added to the Organizer.
Talk to the man in the orange tracksuit, standing to the left of the plaza. It's another familiar face - Will Powers (荷星 三郎 (にぼし さぶろう) Niboshi Saburō), star of The Steel Samurai, and former defendant in one of Edgeworth's past trials.
- About the case (事件について Jiken ni tsuite): It doesn't look like much more filming will be possible here, since construction is due to begin on the film lot soon. There's also the fact that Lotta is running around spreading rumours about the studio... Things don't look good for the film.
- Monster movie (怪獣映画 Kaijū eiga): Powers is playing the role of Moozilla itself.
- John Marsh (シモンについて Shimon ni tsuite): He saw John leaving the film lot. John went into the trailer, but when Powers went to check the equipment later, he was gone again. Edgeworth asks to be allowed to examine it.
Go back, and examine the trailer. There's a cassette tape in John's backpack. Powers plays it back with a nearby monitor. It shows John practicing late at night. The "hoofprints" are visible, so it must be from last night. After a few moments, though, John goes out of shot. The tape ends shortly after. John’s Practice Video (シモンの練習映像 Shimon no renshū eizō) is added to the Organizer. Examine the pile of equipment beside the trailer. Powers says that filming was stopped for today, since a box was stolen. The Stolen box (盗まれた箱 Nusumareta hako) is added to your Logic. The equipment was left behind, so the thief presumably just wanted the box. What did they need a box for, though?
By now, it's after 12:30. Edgeworth takes a moment to wonder how the trial is going, but is interrupted by two loud-mouthed "journalists" - Lotta, and her apprentice Nicole Swift. Talk to Nicole:
- Collecting information (取材 Shuzai): She won't speak unless you give her some information in return. Present the Commemorative Photo (記念写真). She already knows about the kidnapping incident, somehow.
- Top secret material (情報 Jōhō): She witnessed John being taken by some men dressed in black. The Men in black (黒服の男たち Kurofuku no otoko-tachi) are added to your Logic.
Connect the Men in black (黒服の男たち) to Two men (2人組の男). The men Nicole and the taxi driver spoke of are likely the same two, but the taxi driver said that they didn't have John with them. Where did he disappear to? You receive the John wasn't with them (2人だけだった Futari dakedatta) logic. Connect this to the Stolen box (盗まれた箱). Perhaps the box was stolen in order to hide John in it. If the kidnappers had not predicted the presence of the policemen in the plaza, they would have needed another method to kidnap John without being seen. Edgeworth asks the taxi driver, who confirms that the two men had a large trunk with them. The driver offers to take Edgeworth and Kay to the same place.
???????
editThe driver says that the men went to the garage of this house. Kay notices the nameplate on the door - Blaise Debeste!? The garage door is open, so Kay and Edgeworth enter it. There's nobody inside, so you're free to investigate. First, examine the gloves on the floor. They're a pair of oddly-designed, dirty mechanic's gloves... but they seem too dirty to have been used just for repairing a motorcycle. The Mechanic's Gloves (メカニックグローブ Mekanikku gurōbu) are added to the Organizer. Examine the large green box behind them. This looks like the box that was stolen from the film lot, so it's possible that John is still here. Examine the shovel and sledgehammer on the wall. While you're looking at them, you hear banging from somewhere else in the garage. Edgeworth and Kay go to check it out, but instead of finding John, they find, gagged and bound... Sebastian Debeste!? He's understandably upset about his situation, so you'll need to use "that" again.
Logic Chess: Sebastian Debeste / ロジックチェス ~一柳 弓彦~
editSebastian is visibly distraught by whatever he's been through, so you need to be gentle with him. He's probably teetering on the edge, and being too harsh on him will probably break him. In situations like that, it's best to hear him out. At first, you have two choices:
- Tell me what’s on your mind. (キミの話を聞かせてくれたまえ Kimi no hanashi o kikasete kureta mae)
- You’re a failure as a person! (キミは人として失格だ! Kimi wa hito to shite shikkaku da!)
Obviously, the second option is a joke answer - choosing it will get you a brief moment of hilarity, at the expense of instantly emptying your time limit, and reducing your health meter by a small amount. Instead, choose Tell me what’s on your mind. He doesn't think you'll listen to him.
Wait and see. (まだ様子を見る Mada yōsu o miru) He wonders why you're not shouting Objection! at him yet.
Wait and see. (まだ様子を見る Mada yōsu o miru) He claims that he's "lost everything".
Wait and see. (まだ様子を見る Mada yōsu o miru) He asks you what he should believe in.
Choose Believe in yourself! (自分自身を信じたまえ! Jibun jishin o shinjitamae!) He muddles up his words again. Maybe you should lend him a hand?
Choose I believe it's "incapable". (力不足のことだろうか? Chikarabusoku no koto darō ka?) He calms down a little.
Pawn defeated
Now you can ask him about the kidnappers. You have three options:
- Who kidnapped you? (ダレに誘拐されたのだ? Dare ni yūkai sareta no da?)
- Why were you tied up in your own home? (なぜ自分の家で幽閉されていた? Naze jibun no ie de yūhei sarete ita?)
- Do you know the kidnappers' objective? (誘拐犯の目的を知っているか? Yūkai-han no mokuteki o shitte iru ka?)
First, choose Why were you tied up in your own home? He doesn't know, and sounds upset about it.
Wait and see. (まだ様子を見る Mada yōsu o miru) He says that one of the kidnappers told him "blame the owner of this house".
Choose Isn't the owner Blaise Debeste? (主人とは一柳 万才のことでは? Shujin to wa Ichiyanagi Bansai no koto dewa?) He seems to think that someone with a grudge against his father kidnapped him. That's probably not the case, but you do now have a useful clue regarding Blaise's connection to the kidnappers.
Choose Who kidnapped you? (ダレに誘拐されたのだ?) He doesn't know who did it. You have an idea, though...
Choose Blaise was behind the kidnapping! (万才が誘拐犯の黒幕だ! Bansai ga yūkai-han no kuromaku da!) He wonders if Blaise was planning to kill him.
Choose Of course not! (そんなワケがないだろう! Son'na wake ga nai darō!) Edgeworth explains that that's unlikely, since if Sebastian was found dead in the garage, Blaise would be the prime suspect. As for why Sebastian was kidnapped, it's probably for reasons other than ransom. Remember this clue.
Choose Do you know the kidnappers' objective? (誘拐犯の目的を知っているか?) Sebastian believes it was for ransom, but you believe otherwise.
Choose Blaise had another objective! (万才の目的は別にある! Bansai no mokuteki wa betsu ni aru!) Edgeworth asks if Sebastian noticed anything odd during the kidnapping. He says that one of the kidnappers asked him something, after which they abducted him.
Choose What did they ask you? (何を質問されたのだ? Nani o shitsumon sareta no da?) He says that the kidnappers asked him if he knew Judge Courtney. It seems that the kidnappers were, in fact, not looking for Sebastian, but rather John Marsh.
Knight defeated
Sebastian seems to have remembered something, but he's also closer than ever to breaking point. You need to find out what he remembered, and try to calm him down as well. Ask him What did you remember? (何を思い出したのだ? Nani o omoidashita no da?) He says he didn't remember anything about "Po".
Choose About Blaise? (万才のことだろうか? Bansai no koto darō ka?) Edgeworth asks why Sebastian became a prosecutor, to which Sebastian responds that he's "not fit" to be one.
Wait and see. (まだ様子を見る Mada yōsu o miru) He says he became a prosecutor for some "insignificant" reason.
Wait and see. (まだ様子を見る Mada yōsu o miru) He thinks his father would have been more proud of Edgeworth than of him.
Choose You wanted your father's approval? (父親に認められたかったのだな? Chichioya ni mitomeraretakatta no da na?) He says he wanted to help his father, but also says he has no reason to protect him.
Choose Didn't you want to help your father? (父親の役に立ちたいのだろう? Chichioya no yakunitachitai no darō?) He says he wanted to help his father regain his "repetition".
Choose I think you mean "reputation". (それを言うなら汚名返上だ! Sore o iu nara omei henjō da!) Edgeworth tells Sebastian to "triumph over" his father, and stop him before he commits any more crimes. Sebastian responds well to this.
Bishop defeated
He's calmed down again, so now you can ask him about his father's secret. You have three options:
- Where is the evidence for the trial? (裁判の証拠品は? Saiban no shōko-hin wa?)
- What’s Blaise and Patricia’s connection? (美和と万才につながりが? Miwa to Bansai ni tsunagari ga?)
- Talk, or I'll charge you as an accomplice! (父親をかばえば、キミも共犯だ! Chichioya o kabaeba, kimi mo kyōhan da!)
Ignore the last option, and choose What’s Blaise and Patricia’s connection? He says that they interacted at work sometimes, but...
Choose Was there something else? (他にも関わりが? Hoka ni mo kakawari ga?) His father recommended that Roland be made the warden of the prison. Why? According to Sebastian, it was because his father cared about her more than he did about his own son.
Wait and see. (まだ様子を見る Mada yōsu o miru) Sebastian talks about his father when he was Chief Prosecutor, and says that he looked over every piece of evidence that went through the Prosecutors' Offices. That sounds interesting...
Choose Where is the evidence for the trial? (裁判の証拠品は?) He wants you to hear him out.
Wait and see. (まだ様子を見る Mada yōsu o miru) He wanted to keep the evidence in the safest place he knew.
Choose Did you give the evidence to Blaise? (万才に証拠品を預けたのでは? Bansai ni shōko-hin o azuketa no dewa?) Blaise has probably hidden the evidence, instead of keeping it safe. Sebastian wants to know why.
Choose To leave the trial undecided! (裁判をうやむやにするつもりだ! Saiban o uyamuya ni suru tsumori da!) Sebastian becomes even more upset on hearing this.
Rook defeated
You need to return to the investigation, but you can't leave Sebastian as he is now. First, you have to help him figure out how to follow his own path in life. You have three options:
- What are you going to do now? (これからどうするつもりだ? Kore kara dō suru tsumori da?)
- Will you walk the same path as your father? (父親と同じ道を歩むのか? Chichioya to onaji michi o ayumu no ka?)
- Will you continue to be a prosecutor? (検事の道は続けるのか? Kenji no michi wa tsudzukeru no ka?)
First, choose Will you walk the same path as your father? He says he doesn't want your "putty".
Choose I believe you mean "pity". (情けは人のためならずだろう Nasake wa hito no tame nara zu darō) Edgeworth tells Sebastian about a "certain friend" of his, who helped Edgeworth realise where he was going wrong. Sebastian says he doesn't have anyone like that in his life.
Choose I will show you the way. (私が道を示そう Watashi ga michi o shimesō) Sebastian says he doesn't want to be like his father. This is the first step to finding the answer he's looking for.
Choose Will you continue to be a prosecutor? (検事の道は続けるのか?) He wonders if he has the right to continue as a prosecutor, given how he obtained his badge.
Choose Decide that for yourself! (自分で考えたまえ! Jibun de kangaeta mae!) He decides that he wants to continue being a prosecutor, since he'll regret it if he doesn't. Connecting this to what he said earlier, it seems he wants to be a different type of prosecutor to his father.
Choose What are you going to do now? (これからどうするつもりだ?) He says he's returning his red jacket, as his father told him "clothes fake the man".
Choose It’s "clothes make the man". (”馬子”にも衣装だ。 "Mago" ni mo ishō da.) Edgeworth tells Sebastian to become a prosecutor worthy of the jacket he wears. Sebastian says he will, so that no one will make fun of him again.
Wait and see. (まだ様子を見る Mada yōsu o miru) He wonders what to do next. You should remind him of the decisions he came to earlier.
Choose You don’t want to be like your father. (父親とは違う検事になるのだろう? Chichioya to wa chigau kenji ni naru no darō?) The path Sebastian wants to follow is not an easy one. Even the great Miles Edgeworth still questions his own path in life... But Sebastian has already found his own answer.
Queen defeated
For the last time in the game, it's...
Checkmate / チェックメイト
Investigation continues / 捜査の継続
editSebastian runs out of the garage at full speed. Where did he go? Edgeworth and Kay return to the tower plaza for now. Time is running out... The trial will probably be drawing to a close soon. Edgeworth calls Ray to find out how things are going in the courtroom. He tells Ray that he found Sebastian, and that Sebastian gave the evidence for the trial to Blaise. Ray orders a subpoena for Blaise, and tells Edgeworth to focus on looking for John.
Kay produces the evidence found at the crime scene - the Mechanic's Gloves, and the IS-7 Incident Documents (IS-7号事件の資料 IS-7 gōjiken no shiryō). She also presents the Yatagarasu's Badge. Meanwhile, Sebastian emerges from the Grand Tower... and immediately runs off again. Edgeworth and Kay head for the 51st floor of the tower. The entrance hatch is open, and inside, the safe is unlocked. Examine it. Inside are some documents - some sheets of paper, and a photo of Horace Knightley. What's this doing here? The paper reads:
- "I'm all but certain there is a connection between Knightley and Dogen. Dogen's chess partner, whose identity remained unknown until now... was actually Knightley all along. That is proof enough. Tomorrow, I shall interrogate him in the warden's office. I'll get him to confess that he's one of Dogen's henchmen. That thing he laid to rest near the flowerbed 12 years ago... you simply must retrieve it."
The document was most likely written by Patricia Roland, before Knightley was murdered. And its recipient, the owner of the safe, was Blaise Debeste. This proves the connection between Blaise and Roland, and also connects them to the assassin Sirhan Dogen. The Report on Knightley (内藤についての報告書 Naitō ni tsuite no hōkoku-sho) is added to the Organizer. Kay also notices some other things in the safe - Knightley's chessboard and ring. Knightley's Mementos (内藤の遺品 Naitō no ihin) are also added to the Organizer. Exit the storeroom via the ladder. On the viewing platform, you are greeted by another familiar, but less welcome face - Shelly de Killer. He wonders if you've figured out the meaning of his message yet. He denies having killed Huang, saying that that particular contract has expired. His client gave him a false target, and so, he is searching for that client - who, he suspects, is the same person you're looking for. De Killer has one more piece of information - Sirhan Dogen has escaped from prison. He leaves on that note.
Edgeworth and Kay return to the plaza. Suddenly, Courtney's phone starts ringing. The caller identifies himself as the person in the red hood - the person you've been looking for all along. The caller says that he ordered Blaise to kill Jill Crane, and kidnapped Kay in order to draw in Edgeworth, who, the caller knew, would stop at nothing to find the truth. The caller also says that Blaise did not kidnap John. He even knows about Courtney's visit to Edgeworth in the detention center... But how does he know that? And how does he know about John's situation? Regarding the latter, that's because he is the one who kidnapped John. The caller taunts Edgeworth before hanging up.
Edgeworth wonders how the caller knew so much about him and his activities. The caller knew about Edgeworth's visit in the detention center, and that this is Kay's first "job" as the Yatagarasu. Edgeworth has figured it out - the culprit has planted a bug on us (盗聴している Tōchō shite iru). The caller knew something they shouldn't - that Courtney visited Edgeworth in the detention center. And Edgeworth only had one thing on him at that time... Present the Yatagarasu's Badge (ヤタガラスのバッジ). You take a closer look at it. Rotate it around, and examine the back of the badge. Inside is a small device - the bug. Kay grabs the bug, and yells into it - causing Nicole to fall over from shock. Edgeworth turns off the Bug (盗聴器 tōchōki), and places it in the Organizer. He asks Nicole who the boy she saw being abducted was. Nicole says that it wasn't John, meaning the entire investigation so far has been for naught, and you need to start over.
Investigation: Outside Grand Tower - Tower Plaza (2) / 捜査 ~ビッグタワー前広場②~
editKay mentions that she heard a strange sound at the end of the phone call - a loud bang, like an explosion. You receive the Sound of an explosion logic (ハレツ音 Haretsu-on). Nicole butts in again. Talk to her:
- The scoop (スクープ Sukūpu): It's decisive evidence that Moozilla exists! Edgeworth is not impressed, but hears her out anyway. Apparently, she recorded the sound of Moozilla breathing fire. She wasn't actually there when the recording was made, though, as she was using an "unusual" recording method.
- The recording method (録音の方法 Rokuon no hōhō): Nicole was investigating the black market auctions as well, and had wiretapped wireless communications around the Grand Tower. As she was listening to the sound of "Moozilla", Kay shouted into the bug, startling her. Nicole's Tape Recorder (速水の録音テープ Hayami no rokuon tēpu) is added to the Organizer.
Just then, Simon and Regina appear. Leave them for now, and talk to the person on all fours by the taxi rank. It's Detective Gumshoe! What's he doing here? He tries to run away again, but is stopped by Kay. Gumshoe says that, when Edgeworth gave up his badge, he began to think about what it means for him to be a detective, and decided to do some investigating for his own sake. He overheard Edgeworth's conversation with Blaise Debeste in the detention center, and checked over the evidence himself, which led him to the truth behind Jill Crane's fake autopsy report. Gumshoe tries to leave again, but Edgeworth asks him to help investigate. Gumshoe finally relents after Edgeworth bows his head to him.
- The investigation (これまでのこと Kore made no koto): Gumshoe has three pieces of information. First, regarding Kay's clothes: traces of a potent sleeping drug were found on them. Second, he checked the security footage of the tower viewing platform's elevator for any sign of Kay being brought to the roof of the tower. She never appeared anywhere on the footage. Last, and most important - Gumshoe is really happy to be working with Edgeworth again.
- The kidnapping (捜査の依頼 Sōsa no irai): Gumshoe saw John leave the trailer, and head towards the garbage pickup area.
Move to the garbage pickup area, via the gate next to Regina. Examine the milk carton on the ground, and the sign. Gumshoe says that when he came here earlier, the area was loaded with bulk waste. Based on the evidence, it looks like John was attacked here. You receive the Garbage pickup area logic (ゴミ捨て場 Gomi sute-ba). Connect this to Cars that came through (出入りした車). Since the only cars that came through the area today were the taxi and the blue truck, that means the blue truck was the garbage truck. John must have been taken by this truck to a dump. Kay questions if the garbage truck was real. You're sure that it was, and to prove it, present the lock on the gate of the garbage pickup area. The area is locked, so only a real garbage collector could have collected the garbage. John was likely hidden in a large cardboard box, which would have been brought to the dump, where the kidnapper would have simply needed to ask for the box to be returned to them. There are two dumps nearby, so the question becomes "which one?" You receive the Which garbage dump? logic (ゴミ処分場 Gomi shobun-ba).
Next, talk to Simon:
- Search for Sebastian (一柳検事の捜索 Ichiyanagi-kenji no sōsaku): Simon and Regina were searching around the Sunshine Coliseum. Apparently, an event was being held at the Coliseum, with food stalls and fireworks. You receive the Event at the Coliseum logic (コロシアムのイベント Koroshiamu no ibento).
- The circus show (サーカスの公演 Sākasu no kōen): Simon is thankful that Sebastian was found quickly, as there is a show starting soon, and he needed time to prepare for it.
Use your Logic, and connect the Event at the Coliseum (コロシアムのイベント) to the Sound of an explosion (ハレツ音). It's possible that the explosion you heard at the end of the phone call was actually a firework, meaning that the kidnapper was near the Coliseum (コロシアムの周辺 Koroshiamu no shūhen). Connect this to Which garbage dump? (ゴミ処分場). The nearest dump to the Coliseum is the Dawn Waste Center, so John must be somewhere near there. Kay and Detective Gumshoe go to look for John, while Edgeworth heads for the courtroom.
District Court - Courtroom No. 3 / 地方裁判所・第3法廷
editAt the trial, Blaise Debeste is on the stand. He claims that he would have no reason to hide evidence for the benefit of Patricia Roland. Edgeworth asks to be allowed to present evidence proving Blaise's connection to Roland. To convince Courtney, he tells her that Kay is looking for the "most important piece of evidence" - John Marsh. Courtney allows him to present evidence. When asked which piece of evidence, present the Report on Knightley (内藤についての報告書). Edgeworth details the contents of the report. Franziska demands to know who the recipient of the report was. Edgeworth explains that the report was found in the safe of the black market auction's conductor - Blaise Debeste. Blaise refuses to accept it, however, as he has yet to stand trial himself, and threatens Courtney with his "last resort". Courtney reluctantly overrules Edgeworth's evidence. Just as all seems lost, Sebastian enters the courtroom, with new evidence to present. Blaise tries to stop him, by forcing Courtney to declare her verdict... but at the last second, the phones start ringing - Kay and Gumshoe have found John, and he's safe and sound!
With the weight lifted from her shoulders, Courtney is free to declare the true verdict for the trial. She allows Sebastian to take his place at the prosecutor's bench, and asks him to present his evidence. Unfortunately, he didn't find the knife and chisel, but he did remember his father throwing out some "trash" wrapped in a newspaper, from which he heard the sound of a bell ringing. He searched the garbage dump for the evidence, but in the end, he couldn't find it. All he did find was a piece of rolled-up newspaper.
It seems worthless, but Ray thinks you should examine it anyway. Examine the paper to unravel it. Inside is one of Dogen's bells. It's perfectly clean. Again, it looks like a dead end, but there's something else you haven't looked at. When asked, choose the newspaper (新聞紙 Shinbunshi). Rotate the newspaper around, and examine the handprint on the back. Edgeworth requests a fingerprint analysis, but unfortunately, it reports that the marks are from a glove. Blaise taunts his son again, but Sebastian has finally found the courage to stand up to his father. He points out the smell of the newspaper - it smells of engine oil, the same smell you noticed in Blaise's garage earlier. With Edgeworth's backing, Sebastian is finally able to present the decisive evidence: the Mechanic's Gloves (メカニックグローブ). As well as the smell of oil, the glove mark and Blaise's gloves have one other common feature. When asked what this is, present the faded letter "A" on the middle finger. Also, the dirt from the gloves and the newspaper are likely the same. Courtney has them sent to the lab for analysis. Blaise tries to put down his son again, but Sebastian is finally able to stand on his own feet, and bids his father farewell.
Blaise Debeste is finally held in custody for his crimes. A search of the garbage dump is about to begin, and the knife used by Roland to kill Knightley will soon be found. Roland, in her anger, lets rip at Blaise, and openly announces to the court his "creating his own truths". Just as Courtney adjourns the trial, however... Not so fast! Agent Lang bursts into the courtroom. Roland recognises the name as "the one from 12 years ago"... the SS-5 Incident, as Lang explains. He's not here to deal with that, however... he's come for Courtney, and someone else, who enters the courtroom at that very moment... John Marsh. Lang plans to re-investigate the crime scene with his suspects in tow. But the president's murder is no longer the only mystery connected to this case...
