Gyakuten Kenji 2/Episode 3: The Inherited Turnabout/End, Part 3

Since Kate did what she did to prove Master innocent, Edgeworth believes that the IS-7 incident should be reinvestigated. Predictably, Courtney objects, claiming that no false evidence from the incident is in the case files. Edgeworth objects to this, given von Karma's record of forging evidence. Courtney claims that you are trying to act against the P.I.C., and obscure the truth.

Rebuttal: The P.I.C.'s Logic / 追求 ~検事審査会の意向~ edit

Press on the fourth statement. Why would Kate have tried to frame Gustavia? Courtney believes that Gustavia thought Kate was the culprit, and fell for the poison trap while investigating what he believed to be the Gemini sculpture. Of course, she can't prove any of this unless Gustavia wakes up, but claims that she has enough evidence regarding both the IS-7 incident and today's case. She adds two more statements:

  • We already have ample evidence for both the IS-7 Incident and today's poison gas incident.
  • There is no need to investigate any further.
  • IS-7号事件も、有毒ガス事件も、もう十分証拠がそろっています。
  • これ以上の捜査は必要ないと判断いたしますわ。
File:AJAA Investigation Report.png

Present the Liquid Analysis Results (ふたご座の成分結果) on either of these statements. The identity of the blood found in the melted Gemini sculpture remains unknown, and until it is identified, the case cannot be closed.

Debeste returns after this, accompanied by Gustavia, who has finally recovered. Edgeworth asks Gustavia to reveal the truth behind the IS-7 incident, that von Karma tried to conceal from his father. Ray tells him that, since he fell for the poison gas trap, it points to him being Isaac Dover's killer. Gustavia doesn't respond well to this (after a brief period of not responding at all), but Courtney objects to what she calls your "baseless" reasoning. She asks Gustavia to explain why he opened the case to the sculpture. He says he came to view Dover's works, but arrived 30 minutes before the museum was to open. He opened the case in order to take a closer look at the sculpture. You're not convinced, and Courtney has problems with his statement as well, but she says there is no evidence to the contrary. Gustavia then claims that he had no motive to kill Dover.

Ray says that in order for Gustavia to be the killer, he must have had some motive. You receive the Motive for the murder logic (殺害の動機 Satsugai no dōki). He also reminds you of Gregory and von Karma's argument about Gustavia's motive, in which Gregory pointed out the possibility that Dover and Gustavia's relationship had soured. You receive the Partnership turned sour logic (協力関係が壊れた? Kyōryoku kankei ga kowareta?). You now think back on everything you've learned about the IS-7 incident, starting with the fingermarks left on the frame of the Angel's Recipe. Were they left by Gustavia? He may have been trying to view the recipe. You receive the Was Angel’s Recipe his goal? logic (究極のレシピが目的? Kyūkyoku no reshipi ga mokuteki?). Next, you recall Kate's camera, which had less film in it than was expected. You receive the Remaining film (フィルムの残数 Firumu no zansū) logic.

File:GK2 Case 3 Logic 13.png
File:GK2 Case 3 Logic 14.png
File:GK2 Case 3 Logic 15.png

Now to put all this information together. Connect the Remaining film (フィルムの残数) to Was Angel's Recipe his goal? (究極のレシピが目的?). It's possible that Gustavia used Master's camera to take photographs of the contents of the Angel's Recipe. This probably occurred during the Afternoon tea (アフタヌーンティー Afutanūn tī), during which both Gustavia and Dover were not seen. Assuming Dover was killed before Delicia snuck into his room, it appears likely that he was dead before the afternoon tea had ended. Connect Motive for the murder (殺害の動機) to Partnership turned sour (協力関係が壊れた?). Gustavia and Dover worked together until the day before the final of the contest. Gustavia prepared Dover's sherbet the day before, but Dover must have refused to help Gustavia in return. The reason behind this could have served as a motive. Gustavia claims that it was a peaceful parting of ways, and also says that he could not have killed Dover in Master's room during the contest, since Master would have been there making his dessert. You receive the Timing of Dover's murder logic (氷堂殺害のタイミング Hyōdō satsugai no taimingu). Connect this to Afternoon tea (アフタヌーンティー). Dover was alive when the tea break began, meaning this was the only time at which the murder could have occurred. Gustavia isn't going to give in easily, though, meaning you'll need to use "that" to break him down.

You want to find out why Gustavia and Dover decided to collaborate in the first place. It seems that Gustavia pretends to meditate when he doesn't like where the conversation is going. When this happens, consider your move carefully.

Start by asking Why did you collaborate with Mr. Dover? (なぜ氷堂と協力していたのか? Naze Hyōdō to kyōryoku shite ita no ka?) Gustavia says he and Dover were acquaintances before the contest, and since Dover was interested in the contest, they decided to enter it together. Was he not confident enough in his own abilities? He doesn't respond well to this, and claims that they wanted to produce "great works" together.

Wait and see. (まだ様子を見る Mada yōsu o miru) Gustavia and Dover's children went to the same school. Gustavia says that he got on well with Dover. Edgeworth asks if he would have shared the title of "world's greatest pastry chef" with Dover, but receives no response.

Choose Wake up! (起きたまえ! Okitamae!) Dover was a sculptor by trade - why would he have wanted to be known as the world's greatest in another field? Gustavia says that Dover's true goal was the Angel's Recipe.

Pawn defeated

Gustavia has grown impatient, meaning your time limit will decrease quicker than usual. Next, you need to learn about what his goal was. Choose Did you have another goal besides the title? (称号以外に目的があるのでは? Shōgō igai ni mokuteki ga aru no dewa?). He angrily declares that his only goal was the title.

Wait and see. (まだ様子を見る Mada yōsu o miru) Gustavia announces that his design skills have improved greatly since 18 years ago, thanks to his training in Zheng Fa.

Wait and see. (まだ様子を見る Mada yōsu o miru) He says that he used to watch Master's TV show with his son, and studied his desserts. Edgeworth suggests that if he obtained Master's recipes, it would have been a large step towards his goal. Gustavia merely replies "perhaps", and meditates again.

Choose You were interested in his recipes. (レシピにも興味があったのでは? Reshipi ni mo kyōmi ga atta no dewa?) If he was trying to become the world's greatest pastry chef, shouldn't he be more interested in the grand prize - the Angel's Recipe? He admits that he was interested in it.

Bishop defeated

You know the true content of the Angel's Recipe. Now, you need to ascertain what Gustavia really wanted the book for, since he should have also known this. You have two options:

  • Did you know the recipe book's value? (レシピの価値を知っているのか? Reshipi no kachi o shitte iru no ka?)
  • Did you intend to make desserts with it? (菓子作りの参考にするのか? Kashi-tsukuri no sankō ni suru no ka?)

First, choose Did you intend to make desserts with it? "Of course", he replies. You mention that you know the book is very valuable. Gustavia says it was "too valuable to be sold", and meditates.

Choose You seem to know a lot about the book. (ずいぶんレシピに詳しいな? Zuibun reshipi ni kuwashī na?) Gustavia says it was explained to each contestant at the beginning of the contest. Therefore, he must know that it actually contained formulae for medicines. Remember this clue...

Choose Did you know the recipe book's value? (レシピの価値を知っているのか?) He says it contained Master's "best dessert recipes". Really? Time for that clue.

Choose You know what the recipes actually are! (レシピの正体を知っているだろう! Reshipi no shōtai o shitte iru darō!) Did he actually want access to the medicines?

Choose Did you need a new medicine? (新薬が必要だったのか? Shin'yaku ga hitsuyōdatta no ka?) He admits that he wanted to obtain the Angel's Recipe in order to find a cure for his son's illness. You need to ask him some more questions about that.

Rook defeated

Here, you are given three choices:

  • What was the name of the illness? (病名は何なのだろうか? Byōmei wa nani na no darō ka?)
  • What was your son like? (どんな息子なのだ? Don'na musuko na no da?)
  • Did the recipe book have the only cure? (レシピがないと治らなかったのか? Reshipi ga nai to naora nakatta no ka?)

Start with What was your son like? Gustavia says his son loved his desserts. He says you cannot understand how much he wanted to cure his son's illness.

Wait and see. (まだ様子を見る Mada yōsu o miru) Until the semi-finals, Gustavia's son always went to the contest venue to play and visit him. He always wanted to be the first person to taste his father's creations.

Choose Your son sounds pretty healthy to me. (病気にしては元気だったのだな? Byōki ni shite wa genki datta no da na?) Gustavia admits that the illness was not life-threatening. This sounds like a useful clue for later.

Choose Did the recipe book have the only cure? (レシピがないと治らなかったのか?) At the time, the Angel's Recipe was the only source for the cure, but since then, it has become widely available. Gustavia says he was so concerned with winning, that he lost interest in the other contestants' creations.

Choose You had interest in Mr. Master’s works! (天海氏の菓子に興味があるはずだ! Tenkai-shi no kashi ni kyōmi ga aru hazu da!) Gustavia already told you earlier that he was interested in Master's desserts. He claims that the other contestants' desserts were all flavourless. How could that be true? Remember this for later.

Choose What was the name of the illness? (病名は何なのだろうか?) He refuses to discuss it. Time to play one of your clues.

Choose But the illness wasn't life-threatening! (死に関わる病気ではないのだろう? Shi ni kakawaru byōki dewa nai no darō?) Gustavia says that because of the illness, his son couldn't taste his desserts.

Choose Was it a taste disorder? (味覚障害だろうか? Mikaku shōgai darō ka?) One of the cures in the Angel's Recipe is for a certain taste disorder, also contracted by Master... Gustavia is shocked to learn that Master "had it too". Gustavia admits that his son also had the taste disorder. But it seems he's still hiding something... You'll need to use another clue to get him to talk.

Choose Didn't you also have the illness? (あなたも病気だったのでは? Anata mo byōkidatta no dewa?) Was his true intention to obtain the cure for himself? Gustavia says that he made the desserts by himself 18 years ago... His lies are finally unravelling.

Choose Didn’t you collaborate with Mr. Dover!? (氷堂氏と協力していたではないか! Hyōdō-shi to kyōryoku shite ita dewa nai ka!) Gustavia finally owns up - it was not his son who had the taste disorder, but Gustavia himself. Gustavia claims that he wanted the Angel's Recipe in order to cure himself, but he was still interested in the title, and was confident in his desserts' flavours. But, you remember that his entry in the final was rated poorly for taste, and ask him to testify about it.

Press on the fourth statement. Gustavia simply says his "intuition" must have been off during the finals. You're not going to get much more, so when asked if you want to change the topic, choose to Ask about the semifinals (準決勝戦について Junkesshō-sen ni tsuite). Gustavia adds another statement to his testimony:

  • 準決勝戦では氷堂どのとの協力以外、決勝戦と大きなちがいはない。
File:GK2 3-6 Family Photo.png

Present the Family Photo (家族の写真) on this statement. Wasn't his son also missing during the final? His son must have helped Gustavia somehow... Choose He tasted your desserts (お菓子の味見をさせた Okashi no ajimi o saseta). Gustavia couldn't taste his desserts, and he wanted to keep this fact a secret, so he had his son taste them instead. Gustavia calls this an insult, and laughs it off, since you have no proof - not even Gustavia's son, who he hasn't seen in several years. The only thing that can save you now is Gumshoe, with the results of the tests on the blood found in the Winter Palace... and luckily, Gumshoe finally arrives at that moment.

File:GK2 3-7 Rock Salt Lamp.png

Gumshoe reads out the report: the blood belonged to Dane Gustavia. Gustavia tried to conceal this blood, by hiding it within the Gemini sculpture. There was also salt detected, though, which probably resulted in the flavour Delicia picked up on. So where did this come from? Present the Rock Salt Lamp (凶器の岩塩ランプ). There were two lamps, both of which were broken - one was used to kill Dover, but no one knew why the other was broken. It's likely that the other lamp had Gustavia's blood on it. Gustavia knew that, if his blood was found at the crime scene, he would be suspected, so he removed his blood from the lamp - by mixing it into the sherbet lyre. The real reason Gustavia returned was to dispose of this evidence.

Gustavia finally admits his crime - he killed Isaac Dover 18 years ago. Dover refused to help him in the final. Without Dover or his son, Gustavia had no chance of winning, so he went to Master's room to take photos of the cure to his taste disorder. However, Dover caught him in the act, and tried to blackmail him. Gustavia responded by killing Dover. He did not, however, plan to frame Master - rather, he wanted to frame Delicia, since she had cheated in the contest. Gustavia planned to freeze the body, but Kate had discovered the body before he had a chance to. Why would Gustavia have needed to freeze the body? To throw off the time of death (死亡推定時刻をずらすため Shibō suitei jikoku o zurasu tame), and avoid suspicion himself. Gustavia is still laughing about the situation, and says you can't arrest him. Why? He testifies about this.

Press on the second statement. Gustavia says he has nothing left to hide, and will tell you anything you want to know. You decide to ask him what he was doing over the last 18 years. He talks about having his taste disorder cured, and going to Zheng Fa a year after the incident. When asked if any of that seems important, choose His training in Zheng Fa (西鳳民国での修行について Seihō mingoku de no shugyō ni tsuite). Gustavia adds another statement to his testimony.

File:AJAA Wockys Check-up.png

Present the Statute of Limitations book (公訴時効の本) on this statement. One of the conditions states that, if a suspect moves to a foreign country, the time limit is put on hold until they return. Gustavia spent exactly three years in Zheng Fa. That, however, only brings the deadline to December of last year - just over three months ago. Ray has one last idea, though, and tells you to check the book on the statute of limitations again. One of the conditions states that if a possible accomplice is put on trial, the time limit is put on hold until the end of that trial. Since Master was convicted of being an accomplice, that would extend the time limit by another year. Ray, being Master's attorney, can't make himself use his client's imprisonment as a weapon, and so he passes the buck to you. When asked, choose to Raise an objection (異議をとなえる Igi o tonaeru). Courtney asks you to present evidence that will allow you to have Gustavia arrested. Present the IS-7 Incident File (IS-7号事件の資料), and choose the "Suspect Data" page (容疑者のデータ Yōgi-sha no dēta). Gustavia was unaware of the verdict that was reached, and failed to account for this possibility. That makes the total time limit for this case 19 years - the case remains open, and Gustavia can be arrested.

What really happened / 何が本当に起こった edit

18 years ago, the pastry chef Dane Gustavia contracted the taste disorder ageusia. For a pastry chef such as Gustavia, who sought to overtake Jeffrey Master as the world's greatest, to lose his sense of taste would have meant the end of his career. He learned of a cure, which was contained within the pages of Master's famous "Angel's Recipe". The Angel's Recipe was the prize offered by Master to whoever could best him in a dessert-making contest. Gustavia knew, however, that with his poor design skills and failing sense of taste, he would never win the contest alone. To solve this, he decided to collaborate with Isaac Dover, better known as the world-famous sculptor Pierre Hoquet, while Gustavia's son served as his taste-tester. His son visited him during every round of the contest to taste his desserts, and advise his father on what he needed to change to make them taste perfect.

This arrangement worked flawlessly up until the day before the finals. Dover was known for his greed, and had planned from the beginning to use Gustavia only to ensure that his own entries would taste good. Dover's goal from the beginning was to win the contest himself and obtain the highly valuable Angel's Recipe, which he intended to sell. Once Gustavia had finished preparing the sherbet for Dover's entry, Dover betrayed him, knowing that Gustavia would have no hope of winning without his design skills. Even worse for Gustavia, his son had failed to show up for the contest, leaving him entirely helpless.

File:GK2 3-9 Dover and Gustavia.png

Gustavia, having lost his chance at obtaining the cure for his ageusia, went to Master's room, where the Angel's Recipe was kept, during the contest, and used a camera to take photographs of the pages containing the cure for ageusia. Dover followed Gustavia, and quickly figured out the real reason why Gustavia had been allowing his son to taste his desserts - Gustavia was unable to taste them himself. Dover mocked Gustavia about his disorder, and demanded an extortionate sum of money in exchange for keeping Gustavia's condition a secret. Gustavia responded by attempting to attack Dover, but Dover managed to land the first blow, causing Gustavia to hit his head on one of Delicia Scones’ rock salt lamps, which Master had placed in the room after confiscating them. Gustavia responded by killing Dover with the other rock salt lamp.

File:GK2 Episode 3 crime scene past.png

Gustavia then set about trying to frame Delicia Scones for the murder. He did not want Master, who he respected, to be suspected of the crime, but had no problem with letting Delicia, who had cheated and been disqualified, take the fall. He cleared his own blood off the rock salt lamp by mixing it into the lyre of Dover's sculpture, hid both lamps inside Delicia's dessert, and hid Dover's body in the treasure chest of Master's creation, wrapped in one of Delicia's fluorescent cloths. He had planned to freeze the body, in order to throw off the time of death, and then dispose of the lyre containing his blood, but this plan never came to fruition. Delicia had entered each contestant’s room, and ate parts of their desserts, including the base of Master’s chocolate ship. This weakened the base, eventually causing it to collapse, breaking open the chocolate chest in which Dover's body was hidden.

File:GK2 3-2 Dover's room empty.png

The noise of the ship collapsing was heard by Katherine Hall, Master's assistant and adopted daughter, who went to investigate, and discovered Dover's body. She also saw the signet crest next to the body, and realised that Dover was actually Pierre Hoquet, whose works she greatly admired. She took a photograph of the scene, and called the police to report the discovery. Gustavia then removed the body, and hid it in the Gemini sculpture. He also removed the piece of chocolate stained with Dover's blood, and threw it in the fountain. Before the police arrived, however, Kate went to Dover's room with her camera, where she took several photos of his final works. She then removed the sculptures, fearing that the police would damage them during their investigation, and hid them in the mansion's freezer. She then unplugged the glass cases’ coolers, making it appear as though the sculptures had melted.

Kate's discovery of the body, however, ruined Gustavia's plan to frame Delicia. Because the body was found in Master's room before Gustavia could freeze it, Master himself was arrested for the crime. But by the time the investigation began, the body had been removed, making it impossible to carry out an autopsy. The detective in charge of the initial investigation, Rip Lacer, failed to inform Prosecutor Manfred von Karma of the body's disappearance until after von Karma had indicted Master. For von Karma, to admit he was hasty in indicting Master would have meant surrendering his 25-year perfect winning streak, an impossibility for a man obsessed with perfection.

File:GK2 3-1 Gregory Edgeworth in court.png

To ensure his case would proceed as planned, von Karma acquired a forged autopsy report. He used this in the ensuing trial to defeat Gregory Edgeworth's argument that the body was never found. The trial dragged on for a year, until 28 December, 2001, when Master finally gave in and confessed to being an accomplice. At this point, Edgeworth finally used his "trump card", which he had obtained from Detective Tyrell Badd: a recording of Master being forced by the police to confess. As a result, Lacer was dismissed from the police force, and von Karma received his first and only penalty from the Chief Prosecutor. Master, however, did not withdraw his confession, and was found guilty of being an accomplice. It was later discovered by Raymond Shields, Edgeworth's apprentice, that Master confessed because he was told that Kate would be arrested and tried for the same crimes if he did not. The identity of the actual murderer was never discovered by either von Karma or Edgeworth, and the case went unsolved for the next 17 years. Edgeworth left the courtroom with his young son, hoping to obtain a retrial for Master, but was later discovered dead in an elevator - the case that became known as the DL-6 Incident.

About a week before Master's verdict was handed down, Gustavia moved to Zheng Fa, where he spent the following three years studying design. Having obtained a cure for his ageusia, he eventually became recognised as the world's greatest pastry chef. In the process, however, he abandoned his son entirely. His son’s whereabouts remain unknown to this day.

Ray later became a fully-qualified defence attorney, taking over the Edgeworth Law Offices from his mentor. He also took over Master's case, and spent the following 17 years struggling to discover the truth behind the case.

File:GK2 3-4 Poison gas in case.png

Kate was evicted from Master's mansion by his relatives. Over the course of the next 17 years, she became a world-famous actress, eventually obtaining enough money to buy Master's mansion herself. She then retired from acting. At some point, in the mansion's cellar, she found Isaac Dover's body, hidden inside his final work, the Gemini sculpture. She created a plan to lure out Dover's real killer, since he would be the only other person in the world who knew where Dover's body was. She converted the mansion into an art gallery, dedicated to the works of Pierre Hoquet, and its star attraction was to be his "lost" final works - the Gemini and Taurus sculptures. Kate knew that if the real killer heard of this, he would return to the mansion to try and dispose of the evidence linking him to Dover’s murder once and for all. She stole a bottle of Megatoxin X from Delicia, which contained Fatallium as its active ingredient, and placed drops of it on the Gemini sculpture. She then put Normallium on the underside of the case's lid, and froze the lid shut. To complete the setup, she disguised the Autumn Palace as the Winter Palace, and left only it unlocked. If the killer wanted to gain access to the case containing Dover’s body, he would have had to first melt the Normallium. The Normallium would have mixed with the Fatallium, creating a toxic gas. The killer would then have inhaled the gas when he opened the case to remove Dover's body.

File:GK2 Episode 3 crime scene present.png

In the event, Kate's plan worked - Dane Gustavia went to the gallery upon hearing of the Gemini sculpture's exhibition, and acted exactly as she expected. He inhaled enough of the poison gas to cause him to fall unconscious, but not before he managed to drag himself out to the fountain patio, where he was found by the “artist” Laurice Deauxnim (a.k.a. Larry Butz). Kate then planted the bottle of Megatoxin X on Gustavia's person, in order to make it appear as though he had attempted suicide. Also at the scene, however, was Gregory Edgeworth's son Miles, who managed to piece together the information his father learned 18 years earlier, and what he learned in the present, and discovered that Gustavia was responsible for Dover's murder. Gustavia came to, and was confronted by the younger Edgeworth. However, he believed that the statute of limitations on the IS-7 Incident had expired, and taunted Edgeworth about this. Luckily, Edgeworth managed to find loopholes in the law which enabled him to have Gustavia arrested for Dover's murder, finally closing the book on his father's final case.

Epilogue / 結語 edit

Gustavia is taken into custody. Kate, having set the poison gas trap, must also stand trial for her crimes. Ray offers to defend her in court, and promises to get her off the hook. Edgeworth accuses Courtney of being dishonest - she knew that a retrial was required as soon as Dover's body was found, but she refuses to answer Edgeworth. Instead, she warns Edgeworth that he is being targetted by the P.I.C., who will almost certainly order him to appear before them. Edgeworth, however, has no regrets, since his path led to the truth. Ray, Edgeworth, and Kay all go to visit Master. Master doesn't see why Kate would "waste her time" worrying about him, but you have something that shows how much she cares about him. Present the Chocolates. Kate has been making these chocolates for the last 18 years, hoping to give them to Master whenever he was released. Master says that now it is his turn to return the favour to her. Ray plans to have Master cleared of his false conviction - but a "contradiction in the law" would mean that Gustavia would be freed, since the statute of limitations would be reduced to 18 years. Ray again asks Edgeworth to consider which path he wants to follow, and leaves.

At the Edgeworth Law Offices, Ray again "speaks" to Gregory, and tells him about how his son helped solve his final case. He promises to always carry on the convictions and ideals his old mentor taught him, and hopes that someday, the younger Edgeworth will decide to follow in his father's footsteps as well.
