Gyakuten Kenji 2/Episode 3: The Inherited Turnabout/Beginning, Part 1
Ray and Edgeworth arrive at the fountain plaza of the Zodiac Art Gallery. Ray asks Edgeworth what he knows about his father Gregory's final case, the "IS-7 incident". Edgeworth mentions that he himself was in attendance at the trial on that day, watching his father take on Manfred von Karma, who was the younger Edgeworth's mentor, but his recollection is hazy. Ray decides to tell Edgeworth the "truth" behind the IS-7 incident...
Detention Center - Visitor's Room / 留置所・面会室
edit- Court Record
For the parts of this chapter set in the past, you play as Edgeworth's father, Gregory. Gregory was a defence attorney, and so, instead of the Organizer, your evidence in Gregory's portion of this chapter goes in the Court Record (法廷記録 Hōtei kiroku). It works just the same as usual, though.
The story begins in the Detention Center, as do so many defence attorneys' tales. The young Raymond Shields is waiting to meet the defendant, alongside his mentor, Gregory Edgeworth (御剣 信 (みつるぎ しん) Mitsurugi Shin). A murder on Christmas Eve... The defendant, Jeffrey Master (天海 一誠 (てんかい いっせい) Tenkai Issei) enters the Visitor's Room, singing and dancing. Ray seems to recognise him - he's also known as "Master Jeff", from the popular TV show "Piece of Cake". After a rousing performance from the "world's greatest pastry chef", it's time to get down to business. Talk to Master:
- Jeff Master (天海について Tenkai ni tsuite): Not only is he regarded as the world's greatest pastry chef, but he is also a skilled singer and dancer. He's most well-known for his desserts, which Ray describes as "works of art".
- About the case (事件について Jiken ni tsuite): The incident occurred in Master's mansion, where he was hosting a competition to find the world's greatest pastry chef. The body was found inside one of Master's desserts. The victim, Isaac Dover (氷堂 伊作 (ひょうどう いさく) Hyōdō Isaku), was one of the contestants in the competition.
Gregory is convinced of Master's innocence, and agrees to take the case. The next job is to investigate the crime scene.
Contest Venue - Fountain Patio / コンテスト会場・噴水広場
editUpon arriving at Master's mansion, you are greeted by his assistant, Katherine Hall (緒屋敷 司 (おやしき つかさ) Oyashiki Tsukasa). Ray recognises her from Master's TV show as well - she's his co-star on it. Gregory wonders if he should tell his son about this famous show... Kate serves you a cup of tea from an interestingly-shaped tea set (with chilled saucers, oddly). The tea set is the work of the famous sculptor Pierre Hoquet (ポール・ホリック Pōru Horikku), of whom Kate is a devoted fan.
Kate tells you that she was the one who discovered the body. She heard "something breaking" in Master's room, and went to investigate. Inside, the treasure chest Master had designed had broken open, and Dover's lifeless body lay inside. You decide to investigate the room yourself.
There, a massive galleon made of chocolate stands in the center of the room. The room is exceptionally cold. The detective in charge of the case, Tyrell Badd (馬堂 一徹 (ばどう いってつ) Badō Ittetsu), soon notices your presence. However, he won't allow you to investigate. Gregory manages to talk him around, but he insists that he must be allowed to supervise you.
Investigation: Contest Venue - Master's Room / 捜査 ~コンテスト会場・天海の部屋~
editFirst, examine the chocolate ship. The broken treasure chest is where the body was found. The body has been removed, but otherwise, nothing has changed, according to Badd. Examine the outline of the body. You wonder what the breaking sound (何かが壊れる音 Nani ka ga kowareru oto) Kate heard was, and add it to your Logic for later. You also find a signet crest (刻印 kokuin), which is added to the Court Record. Pan the screen to the right, and examine the broken stand (壊れたスタンド Kowareta sutando) underneath the ship to have it added to your Logic. Badd now shows you a photo Kate took when she found the body. He appears to have been beaten to death (殴り殺された Naguri korosareta) - you note this in your Logic. The Crime Scene Notes (現場の所見メモ genba no shoken memo) are added to the Court Record. Gregory notes that the photo creates a contradiction in the scene before you. Examine the ship again, highlight the missing piece of chocolate, and deduce from the Crime Scene Notes that, contrary to Badd's earlier statement, the crime scene has indeed changed - the bloodstain has disappeared! The police aren't responsible, meaning that this is likely the work of the culprit.
Use Logic to connect the Breaking sound (何かが壊れる音) to the Broken stand (壊れたスタンド). It's likely that the sound Kate heard was that of the stand breaking, and the ship collapsing. So, what caused it to break? Why the stand broke? (なぜ壊れたのか? Naze kowareta no ka?) is added to your Logic.
Move to the table next to the oven on the right side of the room, and examine the peculiar teapot on it. This teapot is the only thing in the room that has Master's fingerprints on it. Jeff's Teapot (天海のティーポット Tenkai no tīpotto) is added to the Court Record. Go to the back of the room, and talk to the chef in the red shirt. This man, Dane Gustavia (風見 豊 (かざみ ゆたか) Kazami Yutaka), is another of the contestants in Master's competition, despite his lack of design skills. Talk to him:
- Dane Gustavia (風見について Kazami ni tsuite): Ever since he started using his "candy pumps", he has managed to cut or burn himself at least once every day - hence his red clothes.
- The contest (お菓子コンテスト Okashi kontesuto): The exhibition was a "contest in the art of dessert", as Master called it. Everything in the contest had to be made from desserts - nothing inedible was allowed. The prize was the title of "world's greatest pastry chef", and the prized "Angel's Recipe". The Contest Rules (コンテストのルール kontesuto no rūru) are added to the Court Record.
- About the case (事件について Jiken ni tsuite): He doesn't know much about the incident. He only heard about it after the judging had ended. Master began judging at around 3 p.m., starting from Gustavia's room, and moving clockwise. Kate found the body while Master was judging Gustavia's dessert, but judging continued because Kate only contacted the police.
After talking to Gustavia, you ask Badd what he asked Gustavia about earlier. They talked about the chocolate frame hanging on the wall. Badd felt that something was missing from it, and asked Gustavia what he knew about it. He still hasn't gotten an answer, though, thanks to your arrival. Examine the frame in question now, specifically the handprint. Badd doesn't know whose it is yet. You add the Frame Fingermarks (額縁の指のアト gakubuchi no yubi no ato) to the Court Record. Next, examine the candelabra. One of the "lights of life" has been quenched. Is this symbolic? ...Probably not. Examine the frame again, this time in an area other than the handprint. The picture is not made of chocolate - rather, it's the actual "Angel's Recipe", one of the prizes from the contest. Badd mentions that something seems to be missing. Present the missing chocolate leaf on the lower left. It's not just this - every dessert in the room seems to have one part missing. You receive the Tampered desserts logic (弄らされたお菓子 Ijirasareta okashi). Somebody has tampered with the crime scene, but you can't tell who yet.
Ray mentions that the room is very cold. Gustavia suggests checking the temperature controls, hidden behind a panel in the wall. The room is currently set to 59°F (15°C). Gustavia says that for chocolate, a room should be between 59°F (15°C) and 64°F (18°C). For fresh cream, the room would be set to 50°F (10°C). Return to your Logic, and connect the Tampered desserts (弄らされたお菓子) to Why the stand broke? (なぜ壊れたのか?). Given that every dessert in the room has something missing, and that the ship's stand broke, you can reasonably assume that someone vandalised the room. To finish, talk to the forensics officers. You learn that the streams in each room are connected to the fountain outside.
Detective Badd still believes that Master is the culprit. He says that every room in the mansion was locked during the contest, and the only way to enter them was to use the Mansion Key (屋敷のカギ yashiki no kagi), which was in Master's possession the entire time. Master's room, however, is currently unlocked. Badd argues his reasoning in more detail.
Badd's Argument: Why I Suspect Jeff Master / 馬堂の推理 ~天海 一誠を疑う理由~
edit- If the body had been found in a locked room... Master would've been the prime suspect.
- That's why Master made sure to leave the door to his own room unlocked...
- And to ensure that the body would be seen... Master broke the lid on the treasure chest.
- After the judging... everyone was scheduled to meet in Master's room...
- That would have created the impression... that the murder had occurred... while he was away.
Rebuttal: Why I Suspect Jeff Master / 追求 ~天海 一誠を疑う理由~
editPresent the Crime Scene Notes (現場の所見メモ) on the third statement. Kate entered the room when she heard the ship collapsing. Her photo shows that it was the ship's fall which broke the treasure chest's lid. Therefore, Master could not have broken it, since he was in the middle of judging. Gregory asks if any other fingerprints were found in the room. Badd has a forensics officer dust the chocolate for prints, and finds those of Delicia Scones (デリシー・スコーン Derishī Sukōn), another of the pastry chefs involved in the contest. It's time to find out if this woman is as fearsome as Gustavia claims she is. One of the forensics officers mentions "that prosecutor"... the feared Manfred von Karma (狩魔 豪 (かるま ごう) Karuma Gō). According to Badd, he and von Karma don't get on very well. Apparently, von Karma hasn't lost a case in 25 years, and it's said that he would do anything for a guilty verdict. Is the case already lost?
