Background
editThis was only the second 4pc teams championship after the merge and setup change, and the first that was 2v2. Teams' popularity had declined since then, with only around 1300 players in October 2024, and it was hoped that this championship would generate interest in the variant.
The elite had solidified; most challengers participated in previous championships. The defending team of Luis Ignacio (eyeofthetiger1204) and Carlos Tadeo (carlosgabriel1234) was the favorite; Luis won the most recent self-partner championship and was looking for his record third team title. Arguably his biggest challenger was the team of 2023 runner-up and 2x champion Lars Johan Brodtkorb (icystun) and Andrew (smokingcaruana); after coming in second twice, Lars was looking to take back the title and take back the crown of best 4pc player alive. Other potential challengers included Jeremy Cawthon (2023 & 2021 3rd) and Jai Sandhu (Radon), Tyler Anderson (2023 & 2021 4th) and Mateusz Orzel (mati4333), Vahan Nalbandyan (Cha_charealsmooth) and Gonzalo Rojo (rojitto), Prathamesh Ramane (Prathu_19) and Kanishk Pramchander (JKCheesechess), the team of William Shi (Misterwish) and Diego Correa (Dreamconquerer), and Expanderw12 and KUGLERUNDI, a player who tied for fifth in 2023 and who had been performing very well recently.
While this tournament contained the majority of elite players at the time, there were some notable suggestions. The biggest exception was the account Mystery (player "Vibgyor"), who had been banned from the site. They were the only active player above 3000 and had been much more active recently than most competitive players. Other notable omissions included Jcrossover_14, malburysoappinksoap, and sean3139. Nevertheless, this tournament overall was considered competitive and representative of the elite community at the time
Qualification
editPlayers in bold accepted and participated. The player in italics played part of a match but had to be replaced. Players not bolded or italicized either did not accept their invitation or did accept their invitation but did not play.
Leaderboard & Invitation
editPlayers on both the teams (2v2) and self-partner teams leaderboard were selected and ranked by a weighted average of their ratings. Out of the players on both top 20 (top 21 for Self-Partner due to a closed account) leaderboards, they took "2/3 [of a player's] Standard Rapid Teams rating + 1/3 [of a player's] Standard Blitz Self-Partnering rating...with a correction factor of (Rating-1500) * (70-Rating Deviation)/RD" In addition, a few players were invited subjectively. As it is 2v2, these players were allowed to invite partners of their choosing, and so a couple of players participated that way. Eight teams were qualified this way. This qualification took place on October 5th, and to make eight teams one team was invited later.
