สุภาษิตคำพังเพยมอญ (Mon Proverbs)

The proverbs or words of wisdom below are gathered from the Mon people of Koh Kred, Nonthaburi, Thailand.

• หมอตำแยมาก ลูกตาย (Many midwives will kill a baby.)
• เร่าร้อนที่สุดคือตัณหา ความเย็นคือเมตตา (One’s insatiable earthly desires burn one’s soul; one’s compassion brings his or her peace of mind.)
• พระพุทธเจ้าจะตรัสรู้ หมู่มารมาผจญ (Before the Buddha attained Nibbana, he had to overcome the Maras (evils)).
• พระเจดีย์ฉิบหายเพราะต้นไทร คนฉิบหายเพราะพวกพ้อง (Pagodas are ruined by their nearby banyan trees; humans are ruined by their friends and those who are close to them.)
• ชาติตระกูลดี ไม่ทิ้งประเพณี (A man of noble ancestry should never abandon or ignore traditional values.)
• กบมีปัญญา ต่อสู้ราชสีห์ได้ (A frog with great wisdom can beat a great lion.)
• ปรารถนานั้นคือนิพพาน แต่การงานนั้นไม่ได้เรื่อง (Aim to attain Nibbana; poor performer. [A lazy man cannot attain Nibbana])
• สู้ตายเมือนมดแดง (Fight to death like a red ant.)
• ตัดหนามอย่าไว้หน่อ ฆ่าพ่ออย่าไว้ลูก (Spare no root of a thorny ivy; spare not the children of the killed father)
• ปากจงอย่ายาวกว่าจมูก (Do not let your mouth become lengthier than your nose. = Don't gossip. Birds and crows have long beaks.)
• เป็นลูกกำพร้า อย่าเลือกนม (An orphan cann't choose his milk.)
• คิดร้ายต่อผูอื่น ตับตัวเองจะแตก (Thinking ill of others, one's livers will explode.)

Note: I don't know about this medical fact. What would happen to one's livers if one is thinking ill of other people.) This proverb demonstrates the relationship between mind and body.

• ฝนกำลังตกชุกอย่าเข้าป่า (Do not go into the jungle or forest when the rain is heavy.)
• ใหญ่อย่างช้าง ยาวอย่างงู ก็ยังเอามาฝึกได้ (Big as an elephant and long as a snake is still within the ability of man to train them.)
