Summary

Description

The Red-Spotted Purple is a mimic of the Pipevine Swallowtail. The Pipevine is toxic to predators so the Red-Spotted Purple gets the protection without having to ingest toxins.

The glow and the blue/white coloration results from wave interference phenomenon as light reflects off the layers of membrane in the wing scales. The scientific name for this is thin film interference.
