Vetkoek is a South African fried yeasted dough. The word vetkoek literally translates to "fat cake", and it is soft and bread-like with a crisp exterior. Vetkoek may be served with delicious minced beef or turned into a dessert by serving along with cheese, syrup, honey, or jam.
Ingredients edit
- Active dry yeast
- Sugar
- Water
- Flour
- Vegetable oil
Procedure edit
- Combine yeast, sugar, and warm water. Allow to stand for 5 minutes until the yeast softens and begins to bubble.
- Sift the flour into a large bowl, and mix in the salt.
- Mix the yeasted liquid to the flour, and stir until smooth. Stir or knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth and stretchy.
- Transfer the dough to a clean bowl, and cover with a clean cloth. Allow the dough to rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes, or until doubled.
- Pinch off pieces of dough the size of tennis balls. Roll into balls and flatten them slightly.
- Heat enough oil for deep-frying to 350°F (175°C). Fry 2–3 pieces of dough at a time in the hot oil about 3 minutes per side until golden brown all over.
