In his book "Weaving the Web", Chapter 13 "Machines and the Web", Tim Berners-Lee introduces the concept of a Semantic Web to be "a web of data that can be processed directly or indirectly by machines" (p.191).

The important point is that this stuff is for the machines, not for us humans! What can he possibly really mean?
