editPhil added a 10 micron filter in the hydraulic return line.
Phil added a copper disk (0.64” OD and 0.04” thick with 1/16” hole in center) to each tilt cylinder port to smooth blade tilting action.

editPhil added T fitting with VW low pressure switch to the oil pressure gauge line. Switch is normally closed which lights a red lamp and sounds a buzzer when oil pressure is low. Tubing is 1/4” and pressure switch is 1/8” pipe thread.
Rich replaced his OEM alternator with a Delco 10Si three wire alternator. The OEM pulley fit the Delco 10Si but he had to make a new adjustment bracket. Rich also replaced the OEM belt with a link-belt from Harbor Freight. More power and a rebuilt Delco 10Si is cheaper than an OEM replacement alternator.
Bob replaced his OEM alternator with a Delco 12Si, 72 amp alternator. He put the lock washer between the OEM pulley and the fan as a spacer and used a couple of washers on the adjustment arm. Only additional purchases were a pigtail for $2.50 US and a link-belt, to replace the OEM belt, from Harbor Freight. Bob also replaced the OEM oil pressure and coolant temperature gauges with Murphy Switchgages that include alarm setpoints for the engine warning system.

editNeed to treat diesel with a biocide to kill the bugs and add a lubricant such as Power Serve because of the new low sulfur diesel.

editPhil removed screen on top of sediment bowl and in bottom banjo bolt of primer pump. Installed a Racor 25 series pre-filter (025-RAC-02). Filter can be easily seen, cleaned and removes 99% of the water. Copper tubing is 5/16”.
Main Clutch

Troubleshooting
editLeon's method for checking clutch.
- 1) Select a very slight incline where the dozer will creep backwards when clutch is depressed.
- 2) Prepare anything that can be used to measure the clutch position at a glance such as 1” tape on a 2x4 with 1” gaps.
- 3) With the dozer in first gear and the throttle as low as it will go, gently let out the clutch noting the clutch position on the forward movement and change in engine sound.
- 4) While moving forward, depress the clutch slowly until forward movement stops but before dozer starts to move backward noting the clutch position.
- 5) Repeat two more times and adjust pedal linkage as necessary.

editNew segmented brake bands can be removed/replaced from the top without removing the final drive. Brake cam shaft must be removed first before the anchor pins and care taken to not contaminate the casting. If the brake bands to be removed are not segmented, one anchor end must be cut off to remove brake band.

- PTO shaft – 1 3/8” diameter with 6 splines
- 540 rpm @ 1812 engine rpm
- 1,000 rpm @ 1772 engine rpm
The high speed setting needs to be verified since 1,000 r/m PTO shafts have 21 splines. It is believed that the high speed in this case is 720 r/m. The dozer PTO speeds have been verified to be 540 and 720 r/m at rated engine speeds.

editDozer with rubber tracks have one additional carrier roller per side. Some newer models will have two top carrier rollers per side (steel and rubber tracks).

editDo not forget to grease fitting on the front trunnion of the swing frame equalizer. To get to this fitting you will have to block dozer or drive it up on something like rail ties. Be sure to block blade.

editPhil used jam nuts on bottom “oil level access screen” bolts and slotted screen to fit over these bolts. Used two mini toggle clamps to hold top of screen for easy removal and checking oil level.
Blocking Dozer
edit- Front - Under each side of swing frame equalizer.
- Rear - Under each final drive housing.
- Blade – Block blade so it is not hanging against the lift cylinders.
- Note: If you plan to run dozer, be sure to have track clearance.
