About Bengali–Assamese

Bengali–Assamese is an abugida system, that is when a consonant is followed by a vowel, the vowel is written with the consonant. However, if no vowel is written with the consonant, the vowel is assumed to be an O (hot or boat). A hosonto (্) is sometimes used to indicate that the consonant is not followed by a vowel. These are in contrast to the Latin script (used by English), where consonants and vowels are written separately and no sign is used to indicate that the consonant is not followed by a vowel.

Bengali–Assamese is divided into two alphabets:

• Bengali alphabet, used by Bengali, Meitei, Bishnupriya etc.
• Assamese alphabet, used by Assamese, Hajong, Kamta etc.
