Annotations to James Joyce's Ulysses/Telemachus/008

Annotations edit

008.30 Sir Peter Teazle       Sir_Peter_Teazle is a humorous figure in Richard Sheridan’s satire, “The School For Scandal.”

008.32 hired mute from Lalouette's       In the Victorian_era, mourners were commonly hired for funerals to add to the atmosphere. These people were dressed in dull colors and stood near the entrance to the home or church, looking somber. Lalouette's, Gifford and Seidman note, was a Dublin mortuary whose rental services included mutes.[1] Mulligan's reference would have been obvious to Daedalus, because mutes had been in common use since Elizabethan England, and Lalouette's was famous in the region.
