Super Mario Bros. 2 is the second title in the Super Mario series of video games. It was developed and published by Nintendo, and was originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Super Mario Bros. 2 was originally released in North America in October 1988 and in Europe in 1989. The game was remade and included as one of the four titles in the Super Mario All-Stars collection for the Super Nintendo. The Super Nintendo version became the basis for Super Mario Advance, a Game Boy Advance remake of Super Mario Bros. 2 and a launch title for the system. Super Mario Advance contains additional enhancements such as digitized voice, large enemies, and the Yoshi challenge.

The original Nintendo Entertainment System version was re-released for the Wii's Virtual Console in 2007, and would also be released for the Nintendo 3DS's and Wii U's respective Virtual Console services. The original version also appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as one of the unlockable game demos in "Masterpieces."

Unlike the other Mario games, Super Mario Bros. 2 is actually a redesign of an entirely different video game, Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, so its gameplay differs drastically from the first Super Mario Bros. game. Japan had their own Super Mario Bros. 2, originally released for the Famicom Disk System in 1986. Because of its perceived difficulty and similarities to the original Super Mario Bros., Nintendo decided to not release it outside of Japan at the time. In 1992, Super Mario Bros. 2 was released for the Famicom in Japan with the title Super Mario USA (スーパーマリオUSA). In 1993, the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 was remade for the Super Mario All-Stars compilation as well, in which it is titled Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels.

A critical success, Super Mario Bros. 2 has sold over ten million copies. Many elements from Super Mario Bros. 2 have since become recurring features within the overall Mario franchise.
