Detail view of the face

I have chosen Eugène Delecroix's Orphan Girl in a Cemetery to represent Ellen Foster. This piece of artwork is a perfect illustration of the novel as both the girl in the painting and Ellen are orphans who have spent time in a cemetery. In addition, the girl seems to have just finished crying. After Ellen's mother dies, Ellen must have been in a similar situation. The girl in the painting has an expression of fear (This is similar to the feeling that Ellen experiences she runs away from her father) and seems to be looking at an object, or perhaps a person, who is outside the painting. Perhaps this is representative of her looking into her future wondering what her new life will be like. Ellen was in the same situation. Perhaps Ellen would be looking towards her grandmother (of whom she was very afraid).
